Hempstead Public Schools will be closed on Monday, October 12, 2026, in observance of Columbus Day / Indigenous Peoples' Day.

đź“š Classes will resume on Tuesday, October 13, 2026.

đź’ˇ Fun Fact: Indigenous Peoples' Day celebrates the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of Native American communities. Long Island is home to Indigenous peoples, including the Shinnecock and Unkechaug Nations, whose heritage continues to enrich our region today!

📢 Important Update for Families of English Language Learners!

Beginning in February 2027, New York State will replace the NYSESLAT with WIDA ACCESS for ELLs, a new annual English language proficiency assessment for students receiving English as a New Language (ENL) services.

The assessment measures students' progress in four key areas: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. Results will help schools identify students' language development needs, provide appropriate support, and determine readiness to exit ENL services.

đź“š How Can Families Help?

- Read together daily in any language.
- Encourage students to practice with Lexia English (Grades 1–6) or Rosetta Stone (Grades 7–12).
- Engage in conversations that strengthen language skills.
- Ensure students are well-rested and prepared for testing.

đź“– Learn More! Our family guide includes testing information, preparation tips, and additional resources in English, Spanish, and Haitian Creole.
