Blackwood Educational Land Institute

Blackwood Educational Land Institute Blackwood is an educational farm on a mission to model regenerative agriculture. We are restoring a collaborative relationship between home and farm.

In the 1970s, Wendell Berry commented on the transition of agriculture to an industry: “We are eating thoughtlessly, as no other entire society ever has been able to do.”

At last, we see folks rejecting cheap and convenient food and demanding healthful, nutrient-rich food. We are revitalizing thoughtful eating. After a 50-year decline, the tide is turning. Blackwood Educational Land Institute is

at the forefront of this revolution. For two decades, we have been teaching children and their caregivers where food comes from, how it works to nourish our bodies, how we can develop a heartfelt reverence for the land, and how agriculture is more than just a business. It is a life-support system! In addition to the demand for healthful, nutrient-rich food, there is also a growing interest in farm education among young men and women. In Texas, Blackwood Land is uniquely positioned to attract these young men and women who want to learn to farm, who want to learn best practices, and who want to be sure they can financially support their families. We are ready to teach young adults how to farm sustainably, in harmony with our natural resources, and preserving the environment we are passing to our children. We are ready to teach children how to make smart food choices, and this will help make them informed citizens. We are ready to teach educators about the importance of nutritional foods, seasonal diets, and sustainable agriculture so those teaching our children can positively and exponentially impact our future generation. We are ready to bow to Wendell Berry, thank him for his clarion call, and show him that we are doing our part to teach people how to eat mindfully, healthfully, and sustainably.

Food As Medicine Recipe: Golden Turmeric Lentil & Sweet Potato Stew 🍲
Red lentils give you protein and fiber for steady energy and digestion. Sweet potato adds fiber and beta-carotene for immunity and eye health. Turmeric, black pepper, and a little healthy fat team up so your body absorbs turmeric's anti-inflammatory power. Ginger and garlic add warmth and immune support, leafy greens pack in vitamins A, C, and K, and instead of salt, brighten it with citrus and cilantro. 🌿

Walk On The Wild Side 🌿

We’re thrilled to welcome Dr. Mark “Merriwether” Vorderbruggen back for another hands-on foraging lesson at Blackwood.

Mark is one of Texas’ foremost experts on wild edible and medicinal plants - a lifelong forager, author, chemist, and the founder of Foraging Texas. His work invites us to look more closely at the landscapes we move through every day and recognize just how much knowledge, nourishment, and possibility is growing right beneath our feet.

Spend the morning walking the land with Mark as we uncover the edible and medicinal plants growing all around us, learn their stories and uses, and rediscover a deeper relationship with the natural world.

Walk On The Wild Side (two dates):
🗓️ Saturday, October 3rd 2026
🗓️ Saturday, February 20th 2027

Both classes will occur from 9am-12pm, and are followed by our free Agritourism Day event where the farm fresh fun continues with tours, meals from our farm stand, live music, and so much more.

Long before pharmacies, there was the teapot. 🌿 Medicinal tea is one of the oldest expressions of food as medicine, nearly every culture developed traditions of brewing plants for healing. A warm cup can support digestion, calm the nervous system, ease inflammation, and help the body rest and recover. Ginger for nausea, chamomile for sleep, peppermint for digestion, tulsi for stress, each steep carries centuries of wisdom. Slow down, sip, and let your medicine cabinet start in your kitchen.
