On Friday, May 15th, HTA recognized 3 members who have provided exemplary service to our chapter, the teaching profession, and our union at the annual SGSCC We Honor Ours (WHO) Awards.
Christopher Gutierrez-Cook is starting his second year at the helm of our PAC committee, though he’s been a Union member and supporter for much longer. He brings a fresh perspective, whether it’s co-hosting events with a neighboring local or inviting Assemblyman Corey Jackson to our organizing meetings. Chris always has the betterment of our community and the involvement of our Union in mind. He also springboarded our New Teacher engagement activities with HTA’s “How to Read Your Paycheck” pizza night and other get-togethers. Members leave meetings he has led feeling welcomed, appreciated, and invigorated to get the work done. We are facing a possible 4 seat campaign election this Fall, and we have every confidence that HTA will win every seat, due, in no small part, to Chris’ planning and leadership efforts.
Shannon Vargas is the real deal; every local would be lucky to have a Shannon. Shannon joined the HTA Bargaining Team in Spring of 2021 and has been actively listening, advocating, and collaborating for our members ever since. As a High School Counselor, she brings a unique perspective to the team and is able to speak for a portion of our Local that can be overlooked. When our district decided that they would save money by eliminating half of our Elementary Counselling positions, Shannon was having none of it. She helped spearhead a grassroots effort to save those positions. Hearing students, parents, teachers, and counselors rally in support of our members that night was a beautiful thing. It was also effective. Shannon is an amazing asset to HTA, and we are lucky to have her.
Rozalyn Hovivian is perceptive, emotionally intelligent, and grounded, with a natural ability to read and navigate any room. She joined the Bargaining Team in late fall of 2022 and quickly proved herself to be a formidable presence. Her experience as a middle school math teacher and Alder Resident Mentor Teacher has strengthened the team and informed her thoughtful approach to the work. She was at the vanguard of our union’s co-teaching trials and played a key role in shaping the co-teaching language in our CBA. Her organizational skills are peak—no cap—but all jokes aside, she consistently keeps both the team and the district on track, focused, and moving forward with her ability to track the multiple proposals as they are passed back and forth. With Rozalyn on our team, HTA’s future is bright, dazzling.
Thank you, Chris, Shannon, and Rozalyn, for your service to HTA!
And a big Thank You to HTA's 2nd Vice President, Jamie Killebrew, for being a part of their celebration.
