I don't like to tell people I homeschool. Not because I get disparaging comments about how my kids will "miss out". Or because I'm asked if they get enough socialization, whatever that means.

It's those statements about how I must be so patient, extroverted, organized, crafty, intelligent, etc. When they put me in an entirely different category than themselves and say they could never do what I do.

I am just an ordinary mom. By dinner time most days our house looks like it was robbed. Our living room has toys, books, art supplies and snack crumbs strewn everywhere.

I'm guilty of hurrying my children so we can get out the door, or move onto the next thing. I get frustrated easily with their bad attitudes and behavior and what I perceive as slowness to complete tasks. I still fail in showing them grace when they make mistakes.

But homeschooling is producing the fruit of patience, gentleness and self-control in me. I am being stretched by God daily to do something I don't have the strength or ability to do on my own.

It doesn't take a supermom. Only an ordinary mom willing to be used by an extraordinary God.

So please don't put me on a pedestal. Or any mother. Comparison is the thief of joy.

God wants your heart, and this 24/7/365 parenting process is His primary means of drawing you close to Him right now. When you're at the end of yourself, as I often am, that's the best place to be as far as He's concerned. Because it's not about what WE do; it's about what He does in and through us.

Answering the Call to Homeschool While homeschooling may be a new concept to some, it's become a learning style, and indeed a lifestyle, enjoyed by many for decades.

NC-based Classical Conversations helps lead nation’s homeschool boom SOUTHERN PINES — There’s never been a better time for homeschool advocates in North Carolina. Since 2013 there have been more homeschooled students in the state than private school students, and if homeschooling were counted as a school district, it would be the third largest, right after Wake C...
