This routine did more for math engagement than any game I’ve tried.
Students aren’t just solving problems—they’re defending their thinking, challenging ideas, and convincing others.
The math talk is incredible. The engagement is real. And students start thinking more deeply about the mathematics they’re learning.
Try it this week and watch what happens.

This game gets EVERY student thinking.
✅ Split students into 2 teams.
✅ Draw 2 number cards.
Example: 2 and 7
Students decide:
27 or 72?
✅ Draw 4 more number cards.
✅ Use those numbers and any operation:
➕ ➖ ✖️ ➗
The challenge?
Get as close as possible to the target number.
The only rule:
Each number can only be used once.
⏱ Set a timer.
When time is up, each team shares:
• Their equation
• Their answer
• Their thinking
The best part?
Students are engaged.
Students are competing.
Students are talking math.
And some of their strongest mathematical thinking comes out.
Try it tomorrow and watch what happens!

One of our favorite place value routines is True or False.
Simply write an equation on the board and ask students: Is this true or false? How do you know?
In this lesson, students used base ten blocks and whiteboards to model their thinking and justify their answers. The real magic happens when students talk through each step of their reasoning. As they explain their thinking, they deepen their understanding of place value and build confidence in their math skills.
This quick routine is engaging, easy to implement, and provides valuable insight into student thinking.
Try it with your students today—you’ll be amazed at how quickly their place value understanding grows!

After 2 years of using Striving Mathematicians, this math interventionist shared that she feels more confident in her teaching, her students are more engaged, and they are actually loving the activities.
Even better? She’s seeing definite growth.
That’s what happens when teachers have a clear path, students have hands-on routines that build number sense, and math instruction moves beyond memorizing steps.
