From your littlest learners to your advanced mathematicians, these routines get students solving, explaining, and sharing their thinking:

✨ WOULD YOU RATHER?
Give students two choices with math to solve. Then ask them to choose and explain why!

✨ CONVINCE ME THAT…
Challenge students to convince you that one choice is better than another. Have them use math, models, or manipulatives to support their reasoning.

✨ TRUE OR FALSE?
Put a math equation on the board and ask students to prove whether it’s true or false. How do they know? Can they show it another way?

Try “Which One Doesn’t Belong?” 🔢

Show students a group of numbers and ask them to choose the one that doesn’t belong—then explain WHY.

The best part? More than one answer can make sense! Students practice noticing patterns, defending their thinking, and listening to different ideas.

Struggling with student engagement? Try these 3 easy math routines! 🙌

âś… TRUE OR FALSE
Write an equation on the board and have students decide whether it’s true or false. Use manipulatives or whiteboards to prove their thinking!

🔎 WHICH ONE DOESN’T BELONG?
Display a set of numbers or equations. Students choose one that doesn’t belong and explain why. Different answers can lead to great discussions!

🤔 WOULD YOU RATHER?
Ask a math question like, “Would you rather have 3 bags with 4 cookies each or 2 bags with 7 cookies each?” Have students solve, choose, and explain their reasoning.

My students’ engagement has never been better since adding this “Convince Me” routine! 🙌

Start with a simple prompt: “Convince me that six is greater than four.”

Then give students manipulatives to build their proof and explain their thinking. 🧩

As students share and compare their models, a simple question becomes an opportunity for deeper thinking, meaningful discussion, and learning from one another!

Your students can multiply—but do they understand “times as many”? 👀

This simple routine helps connect the words, the equation, and what the numbers actually mean:

🗣️ Hear it: “50 is 10 times as many as 5.”
✏️ Write it: 10 × 5 = 50.
🔵 Model it: Draw 10 groups with 5 dots in each.

Giving students multiple ways to work through the same problem helps make abstract math more concrete—especially for learners who need extra support.

If your students are struggling with division, try this routine: Prove It! đź‘€

Give students a division problem and ask them to prove their answer. They can use counters to make equal groups or draw their thinking on a whiteboard. Then give them another problem and let them choose how to show it.

You’ll see who understands what division means and who needs more practice making equal groups.

I was shocked at how this little activity drastically improved my students’ number sense. 🤯

Sometimes students can tell you what “two less” is, but they don’t actually understand what’s happening to the number.

That’s why I love using base 10 blocks to make it visual.

We started with 49 — 4 tens and 9 ones.

Then I asked, “What happens if we take away 2?”

Instead of just memorizing that 49 - 2 = 47, students physically removed two ones blocks and could SEE that the tens stayed the same while the ones changed.

49 ➡️ take away 2 ones ➡️ 47

It’s such a simple activity, but this kind of visual modeling helps students build real number sense instead of just memorizing answers.

Once they can actually see what’s happening to the number, counting backward and mental math start to make so much more sense. 🙌
