Empowered to Read Hi! I'm Julie, and I'm a special education teacher and a private reading tutor. I'm Julie and I'm a special education teacher and a private reading tutor.

I specialize in reading, writing, and spelling instruction for struggling readers, including students with dyslexia, ADHD, and other language-based differences. The reading program I use is the Wilson Reading System, which is Orton-Gillingham-based, and aligned with the science of reading. It is a direct, explicit, and systematic method of instruction of phonemes and the structure of language. The

Wilson Reading System is also a multi-sensory approach to learning, which involves multiple areas of the brain, and provides additional opportunities to understand new information, remember it, and recall it later. Learning to read and spell are skills, and struggling readers need direct and explicit instruction to master these skills. Teaching phonemic awareness is essential because it is the foundation for spelling and word recognition, and it is one of the best predictors of reading ability during the first two years of instruction at school. Learning phonics is very difficult for students without strong phonemic awareness skills. Struggling readers often feel frustrated, anxious, and discouraged. They lose interest in reading, and their self-esteem suffers. I believe that emotionally sound instruction is equally important, and I take the time to develop safe, trusting relationships with my students. Taking risks can be scary, and if the learning environment is a safe one, students are more likely to share what they know and accept that mistakes are a part of the learning process. The science of reading is a vast, multidisciplinary body of evidence that provides conclusive, empirically supported research that identifies how we learn to read. We read and hear alot about the science of reading and many people think this just means phonics instruction.
The Science of Reading is much more than just phonics, in fact phonics is only one component.
In 2000, the U.S National Reading Panel released a report that identified 5 essential components or ‘pillars’ that every child needs to be taught to become literate.
These include:
1. Phonemic Awareness
2. Phonics
3. Vocabulary
4. Fluency
5. Comprehension
The definitions in the image I’ve posted are very basic explanations used by Dr Kymyona Burk in the movie “The Right to Read”, to help explain simply what each component means.

Obtaining a professional dyslexia diagnosis can be a rather daunting task. Medical doctors and schools often refer worried parents to either a neuropsychologist or a clinical psychologist in order to receive a detailed diagnosis. A comprehensive evaluation is comprised of different assessments which can rule out any underlying comorbid disorders. For example, a psychologist will look for other things that might be getting in the way of your child’s learning. These may include ADHD, anxiety, or other mental health issues.
