Today I will be speaking with a couple who actually met while he was RVing, and she retired to join him on the road after getting married.

Matt and Kiersten Buote traded conventional careers for the freedom of traveling the country in their RV.

Matt started RVing in 2019 after owning a commercial fitness equipment business in New England.

Kiersten worked in the golf industry and was an assistant general manager at a club in Sedona, AZ, before deciding she was ready for a change.

After getting married and living in an RV for about a year, they hit the road in search of new adventures.

They actually stumbled into Workamping when Kiersten found a recreation manager position at a New Hampshire campground.

Since then, she has handled activities, reservations and retail duties, while Matt has put his maintenance background to work doing groundskeeping, repairs and helping guests get their RVs into campsites.

In this episode, Matt and Kiersten talk about what they enjoy about Workamping, where their travels have taken them, and why they value the freedom to choose where they work and how much time they take off between assignments.

How Skoolie Life Led Susan and Tad to Workamping Across America

Originally from Jefferson City, Missouri, Susan spent 29 years working as a social worker. Tad spent most of his career in the printing industry.

Susan admitted they were not particularly happy with the lives they had been living.

She was already retired, but Tad was still working long hours to maintain their home and everything that went with it. Susan wanted to travel, and her retirement income gave them enough financial flexibility to consider making a major change.

So, Tad quit his job and they started traveling.

Before Workamping, the couple would simply move from one destination to another. Instead, a Workamping position gives them an opportunity to remain in an area long enough to understand it.

Today I’ll be talking with a woman who has been RVing and Workamping with her husband and three children for nearly five years.

Hailey Warner got the idea to start RVing after she saw a video reminding parents that they get only 18 summers with their children.

She decided she wanted to make the most of those years by selling nearly everything, buying an RV, and hitting the road.

Workamping helped to make the adventure possible by making it more affordable.

Since then, Hailey and her family have worked at an amusement park in Kentucky, campgrounds in Wisconsin and Tennessee, the sugar beet harvest, and a Jellystone Park in Texas.

Hailey’s story shows families do not need an expensive RV or a perfect plan to start Workamping.

Getting a job offer is exciting. Getting two or three at nearly the same time can feel like hitting the Workamping jackpot.

Yet, multiple offers can quickly turn a pleasant problem into a stressful decision. One employer wants an answer today. Another opportunity sounds better, but the hiring manager will not make a decision until next week. Meanwhile, a third employer has just scheduled an interview.

It is a common situation in Workamping because employers rarely follow the same hiring schedule. Some make decisions within days while others take weeks. Job alerts, Hotline ads and seasonal hiring waves can also put several applications in motion simultaneously.

Having choices is a good thing. The key is making a thoughtful decision without creating problems for employers or damaging your reputation in the process.

Before you accept a Workamping position, be sure you know all of the details!

Those details should include how the compensation will be provided to you and if or how it will be reported.

In general, Workamping positions are employee positions and you should receive a W2 for income earned. Generally, business owners withhold income taxes, withhold and pay Social Security and Medicare taxes, and pay unemployment tax on wages paid.

If you receive a 1099 for work, you are a contractor and you are responsible for paying your own taxes. To be considered a contractor in the eyes of the IRS, you must have full control over the work you are given. This includes the hours you work, the tools needed to do the work, the place the work is done, etc.

In general, an RV site/perks provided as part of your employment should not be taxable. States have varying regulations on volunteering/bartering - and employers have different levels of knowledge on those regulations - so be sure to bring this up with each employer.

Today I am speaking with the director of operations for a small investment group that owns and manages campgrounds in Indiana and Pennsylvania.

Pinecone Resorts manages Manapogo RV Campground in Orland, IN, which is a 302-site park on a lake with a marina, boat slips, and plenty of activities.

The company also operates Benner’s Meadow Run Campground in Farmington, PA, which is a 168-site RV park with 12 deluxe cabins, a pool, mini golf, and access to plenty of outdoor recreation.

Operations Manager Stacey Huck said Workampers play an important role at both properties.

Pinecone Resorts hires Workampers for maintenance, housekeeping, front desk work, and activity positions. The company is also looking for a general manager for its Indiana campground.

The company pays Workampers for every hour they work while also providing a free RV site. Most Workampers are expected to work full-time, or about 40 hours per week.
