Congratulations, Parker!

SPORTSMANSHIP IN SCORING LEADS TO RECORD: In scoring (doing statistics), football is pretty straightforward, much like basketball and unlike baseball where the official scorer can determine if a play is a hit or an error. Sometimes, however, there are circumstances. Take for example, in a Sept. 7 game against Jonesboro Westside. Heber Springs was leading 41-0 and had a running clock in the third quarter. Senior Parker Brown fields a punt at midfield. He has plenty of running room in front of him, and probably would have scored a touchdown. But what does he do? He didn't signal for a fair catch, but he caught the ball and took a knee. I had never seen that before in a game but scored that as if he had signaled for a fair catch (which doesn't count as an official return and hurt his return average).

Why does that matter? Flash forward to last week. After his third and fourth punt returns for a touchdown. I was curious what the state record was for a punt returns for a touchdown in a season was so I checked -- it was seven. I thought, 'well, maybe a deep run at the playoffs and a good bounce here of there or those willing to kick to him, he might have a shot.' Realistically though that was probably out of reach. But one record that was possible, and more than possible, could be earned on Friday night -- the state record for punt return average in a season. The issue was that Parker had eight punt returns on the season heading into the Lincoln game and needed two more returns to quality for the 10 returns minimum in a season, and at least eight yards.

Parker got the eight yards, and then some, with a 28-yard return on his first attempt. All he needed now was one more punt return attempt. As the game went from a defense struggle to shootout in the second half. That second return didn't materialize. Coupled with the disappointing loss on Friday was that Parker was one return short of the state record.

I do take records seriously. Sure they are made to be broken, and I do want to see them broken, but you are taking an accomplishment away from someone so they need to be earned and not just given. At some point over the weekend, that play at Jonesboro Westside came back to me. Did I score that right? Should I have counted that as a return? I checked every professional, college and high school statisticians guide for any examples, and I could not find one involving a punt return and the player taking a knee. I didn't want to just give something and have an excuse so I reached out to a couple of people that I trust and gave them the example, and asked how they would have scored it? And they had reached the same conclusion that I had. I had scored it wrong back in September. You see even plays at the end of game where the winning team gets in the "victory" formation and take a knee to kill the remaining clock are counted as negative rushing plays (though scored to the team and not an individual). But in this instance, Parker made an individual decision and showed sportsmanship.

So after correcting the scoring decision instead of the nine I had recorded, Parker finished with 10 punt returns and a state record, 34.7 yard per return average (bettering the pervious state of record of 32.6 set by Mayflower's Herb Grigsby in 2001). Of course that is all contingent on no one else in the state having a better average this season and the minimum number of returns.

I could have just posted about another record for Parker, but I wanted to show that sometimes being a good sport is just as important as being a good player.

Congratulations, Parker!!!
