Meet Marce Becerra Academy student Roselia!

September 30th is Orange Shirt Day, a day to honor the Indigenous children who were taken from their families and communities and never made it home from Indian Boarding Schools.

For Roselia, this day is deeply personal. Through MBA’s Native American Initiative and Big Picture Learning, she has been exploring her roots, culture, identity, and the stories that deserve to be remembered.

Roselia created a project to help bring awareness to the history and lasting impact of Indian Boarding Schools and we are proud to see her use her voice and creativity to honor those who came before her.

Stop by the California Indian Museum and Cultural Center in Santa Rosa between September 4th-14th to see Roselia’s project and show her some love and support!🧡

One of the things we love about learning at Marce Becerra Academy is that students get to turn real problems into real projects.
This semester, Ethin is taking on a pretty big one: building a boat from scratch.
Working with HUSD Arts teacher Linus Lancaster, Ethin will be constructing a 17’ Banks Dory that will eventually help us access harder-to-reach areas while conducting field work for the Ashokawna Watershed Atlas.
Rather than purchasing a boat, we’re using this as an opportunity to learn the process of designing, building, problem-solving, and working with our hands.
We’ll also have technical guidance from Rocking the Boat in San Francisco along the way.
This is more than an art project. It’s a chance to build something useful, learn new skills, and create something that will become part of our future field work.

Another amazing internship visit with our student, Citlalli!

Citlalli got some hands-on experience and walked us through the process from start to finish!

She started with a detox shampoo and regular shampoo, followed by the Matrix Food For Soft hair mask. Then it was time for a blowout using Brazilian Blowout Shine Coat spray, finishing the look with some curls!

We love seeing our students get out into the community, gain real experience, and explore careers they’re interested in. This is what Big Picture Learning is all about !!
