What a treat to get a lil lobster, wine and community in right as summer is ending.

It was such an incredible experience to chat with Peter Merriam - did you know he’s been hosting this lobster boil for 17 years and used to trade wine for lobsters back in the early days?!

Between the full house, the wine flowing from winemaker William Weese and the fact that everyone present was a wine club member, the sold out event really felt like a big family dinner versus just another pretty winery event.

That’s what sets Merriam Vineyards apart for us: the little moments of hospitality. From personally greeting everyone as we lined up for our (whole!) lobsters, to the hand drawn guides at each setting on how to eat one, to ending up covered in lobster juices (sometimes not just your own) they nailed all the little details that make you feel like you are truly connecting with the wine, the land, to one another and to the timeless joy of gathering around a table.

I started Own Rooted Hospitality | Wine Representation + Experiences to help correct some of the gaps I saw in the industry - between the three tier distribution system, a saturated market aka choice fatigue for the consumer, and just old marketing and outreach tactics being used in a new wine world. ⁠

And just like not all wines are for everyone so is my agency. At ORH, we want to support people we admire and want to see succeed because we genuinely believe in the product or the story a winery is telling. We look for female owned/led or organically grown as our primary non-negotiable (but family-owned organic is also in-line with our values). I’m selective about who we represent and that’s okay!⁠

For the vast majority of producers, it’s not enough to just make great wine. The space around it needs to be built too.

Wine is not meant to be poured and then forgotten. It’s meant to be a conduit for hospitality, conversation, community and the occasional lively debate!

The bottles that mean the most to us are the ones that have a story attached to them. Whether it’s the producer’s story, the grower’s story, or the story that results from opening that bottle… those are the wines we live for and the ones that keep us coming back, again and again.
