Our 6th Grade Science students have been actively exploring Hydrology, Heat Transfer, and Weather through engaging, hands-on learning experiences. These activities provide students with opportunities to apply scientific concepts and demonstrate their understanding in meaningful and interactive ways.

Throughout these units, students have:

📊 Graphed and analyzed ocean topography
💧 Created edible aquifers to model groundwater systems
🌡️ Demonstrated the movement and characteristics of warm and cold fronts
🌪️ Created 3D models of weather instruments used to collect and measure atmospheric data.
We are proud of the enthusiasm and effort our students continue to demonstrate as they explore the world of science!

Today Ms. Medders' class had some student-led instruction during our class novel study, and the kids absolutely LOVED it!

Students came up to the front of the class and took the lead on several questions from our study guide. They read each question, discussed the possible answers with the class, called on a classmate to fill in the blank, and then recorded the correct answer on the study guide.

It was so much fun watching them take ownership of their learning and confidently lead their classmates!

In Mrs. Powell’s 6th grade math class, learning doesn’t always mean Mrs. Powell is the one doing the teaching—some of the best learning happens when students learn from one another!

Students first worked independently on percent problems, finding the percent, whole, or part and justifying their answers. They then worked in groups to compare strategies, explain their reasoning, question one another, and help identify mistakes. The goal wasn’t simply to see who was right. Students with different answers were encouraged to defend their thinking rather than automatically change it.

The class then came together to discuss the problems, share different strategies, and determine the correct solutions through mathematical reasoning.

This type of classroom discussion and mathematical discourse is supported by John Hattie’s Visible Learning research, with classroom discussion having a reported effect size of 0.82.

Mrs. Powell knows that meaningful math learning isn’t just about teaching students a process—it’s also about giving them opportunities to think, explain, justify, and learn from one another.
