The mound has a funny way of teaching you about life.

Some days, everything clicks. Other days, nothing seems to go your way. You’ll throw your best and still give up a hit. You’ll work hard and not see results as fast as you’d like. That’s part of the game.

The lesson isn’t to avoid hard things; it’s to learn how to keep showing up anyway.

Every challenge you face on the field is building something bigger than a better pitcher. It’s building resilience, confidence, discipline, and the ability to handle adversity. Those are qualities that will stay with you long after your playing days are over.

Dig deep. Trust the work you’ve put in. Keep moving forward, even when it’s uncomfortable.

Because the athletes who learn to handle hard things early don’t just become better pitchers, they become stronger people.

Keep showing up. Your future self will thank you.

Your mindset is setting the tone before you ever throw a pitch.

Have you ever noticed how one negative thought turns into five?

“I can’t throw strikes.”
“I’m pitching terrible.”
“I’m letting my team down.”

Before you know it, you’re no longer competing… you’re fighting your own mind.

The truth is, your brain believes what you repeatedly tell it.

A negative mindset doesn’t guarantee a bad performance, but it makes it much harder to perform at your best.

A confident, positive mindset doesn’t guarantee success either, but it gives you the best chance to respond, adjust, and compete.

So how do you challenge negative thoughts?

➡️ Recognize them. Catch yourself when your inner voice starts spiraling.

➡️ Question them. Is this thought actually true, or is it just how I feel in this moment?

➡️ Replace them. Instead of “I can’t throw a strike,” try “I’ve thrown thousands of strikes. Trust my training.”

➡️ Reset. Take a deep breath, focus on your next target, and commit to the next pitch.

One bad pitch doesn’t define your inning.
One bad inning doesn’t define your game.
One bad game doesn’t define your season.

The best pitchers aren’t the ones who never have negative thoughts.

They’re the ones who don’t let those thoughts stay in control.

Win the battle in your mind, and you’ll give yourself the opportunity to win on the field.

One tool I like using with my pitchers is the spin trainer (ball on a stick). While it may look simple, it's designed to help athletes understand one of the most important parts of pitching: release.

This drill helps pitchers:

✅ Develop fingertip awareness

✅ Understand how spin is created

✅ Improve release consistency

✅ Learn the difference between pitch spins

This tool allows athletes to slow things down, focus on the details, and learn what a clean release should actually feel like.

Every pitch gets its movement from the way the fingers come off the ball. The better a pitcher understands that release, the better chance they have of creating cleaner spin, more movement, and greater consistency in the circle.

Before you can command movement, you have to understand how to create it.

The Difference Between Nervous and Unprepared

A lot of pitchers confuse these two feelings.
And it changes how they compete.

Being nervous means you care.
Your body is alert, your energy is up, and, your mind is aware of the moment.
That’s not a problem.
That’s readiness.

Being unprepared feels different.
It’s not just energy; it’s uncertainty:

“I’m not sure what I’m doing today”
“I haven’t done this enough in practice”
“I don’t trust my mechanics under pressure”

That’s where performance starts to slip.

Here’s the key difference:
Nervous athletes have done the work; they just have to settle into it.
Unprepared athletes are trying to find answers in real time.

One leads to focus.
The other leads to doubt.

The goal isn’t to eliminate nerves.
It’s to eliminate surprises.
Because when you’re prepared, nerves don’t control you; they just show up with you.

Confidence isn’t the absence of pressure.
It’s knowing you’ve already been here in practice before you ever get there in a game.

Work Ethic = Training + Recovery + Consistency

Most people define work ethic as just how hard you train.
But in pitching, that’s only one piece of the equation.
Real work ethic is built on three things:

Training

What you do when you’re in the work:
Bullpens with intention
Mechanical reps, not just random throws
Strength work that supports pitching
Competing with purpose, not just effort

Recovery

What you do when you’re not throwing:
Arm care done consistently
Rest that actually restores the body
Sleep that supports performance
Knowing when to back off before breakdown happens

Consistency

What connects everything together:
Showing up even on off days
Repeating good habits over time
Not letting emotions dictate effort
Staying disciplined when results fluctuate

Without all three, work ethic falls apart.

Training without recovery leads to breakdown
Recovery without training leads to stagnation
Both without consistency leads to inconsistency

Elite pitchers don’t just work harder. They work smarter, recover better, and repeat it longer than everyone else.

That’s the difference.

Pitching isn’t a once a week commitment.

A lesson each week is a great start, but it’s only one piece of the puzzle. The pitchers who make the biggest jumps are the ones who keep working when no one is watching.

- They do their drills at home.
- They complete their strength workouts.
- They focus on the little details.
- They spend time in the heat.
- They repeat the same movement hundreds, sometimes thousands of times until it becomes second nature.

Those small choices don’t seem like much on any given day, but they add up.

Improvement isn’t built in a one hour lesson. It’s built in every rep between lessons.

As a coach, I can teach mechanics, create a plan, and guide your development. But I can’t do the work for you.

And that’s the beautiful part.

Because when all of those hours, drills, sore muscles, and frustrating days finally come together… when the velocity jumps, the spin gets sharper, the command improves, or you accomplish a goal you’ve been chasing…

There’s no better feeling.

Trust the process. Stay consistent. The work always shows.

The Most Underrated Skill in Pitching: Recovery Discipline

Most pitchers think development is about what they do in the bullpen.
But the real separator is what they do after the bullpen.

Recovery discipline isn’t just resting when you’re tired.

It’s doing the things most pitchers skip when nobody is watching:

Arm care done consistently, not occasionally
Hydration before you feel dehydrated
Sleep treated like training, not optional
Light movement instead of complete shutdown
Knowing when not to throw hard

Because here’s the truth:
You don’t get better during the workout.
You get better when your body adapts after it.

If recovery is inconsistent, everything else becomes inconsistent too:

Velocity fluctuates
Command comes and goes
Mechanics feel “off” for no reason
Fatigue builds quietly over time

Today's PVC pipe drills focus on two of the biggest keys to efficient pitching: leg drive and front-side stability.

1. PVC Leg Drive Drill
Holding the PVC pipe across the chest removes the focus from the arm and allows athletes to concentrate on what creates power→ the lower half.

The goal is to:
• Drive aggressively off the rubber
• Stay smooth and connected throughout the motion
• Maintain posture and balance
• Finish strong on top of the toe drag

What should it feel like?
You should feel your back leg creating the movement, your hips carrying you forward, and your body moving as one connected unit.

2. PVC Front Side Stability Drill
This drill teaches pitchers how to resist with the front side rather than pulling open early.

Holding the PVC pipe with the glove arm creates immediate feedback. If the pipe gets pulled across the body, the front side is opening too soon.

The goal is to:
• Stay strong into the front side
• Keep the front shoulder stable
• Transfer energy toward the catcher
• Rotate around the front side instead of pulling off the pitch

What should it feel like?
You should feel your core engaged, your front side staying firm, and your energy moving directly toward your target.

Remember: Power isn't just about throwing harder. It's about how efficiently you transfer energy from the ground, through your body, and into the ball.

The Secret to Velocity Isn’t Your Arm

Most pitchers think velocity is an arm thing.

More effort.
More whip.
More “throwing harder.”

But that’s not what actually creates long-term speed.

The secret is this:

Velocity starts from the ground up.

It’s built through:
A strong, explosive drive off the rubber
Direction that stays straight to the plate
Timing between lower half and arm separation
A stable front side that lets energy transfer forward

When those pieces are working together, the arm doesn’t have to “create” speed.
It just delivers it.

When they aren’t?
The arm tries to do everything…
and that’s when mechanics break down and inconsistency shows up.
