Local students are returning to the classroom today, and I'm praying for a wonderful first day for all. Over the years, I see recurring habits of successful young people of which I'll share a few.
1. Make the most of your time in the classroom. Focus on your teacher and work as if you were at your favorite event.
2. Ask questions. You don't have to speak up in front of the class. You can write down your questions and look up the answer yourself, go to the teacher after class, or e-mail the teacher with your question.
3. Keep up with your assignments and grades. Be sure and check your school's platform for posting grades weekly. I see many bad grades due to missing assignments- catch it soon enough to at least get partial credit.
Parents make sure your child gets regular rest (even if it means taking electronics out of the bedroom), and the companions to rest - a good diet and exercise. A period of play will actually help most children sit down and focus on homework. I saw this first hand in the classroom when my students listened better after returning from PE.

As I tended my small plot this morning, I thought about how gardening and tutoring are alike. Sometimes it seems to take a long time to get results with little change from meeting to meeting. At other times, I'm in awe of the growth. This year I planted my tomato plants earlier than last year, but they still matured at about the same time as other years because there are so many factors at play. Whether tomatoes or with people, the rewards are worth the work and the wait.

Here's more fun, free activities! Sign your child up for the summer reading program. They not only get points/rewards for reading books but also for attending these programs. Attend more programs at other libraries in the Huntsville system.

Exciting news! $2,000 to be awarded to a 2026 graduating senior. The scholarship was originally established for students in Madison County and Huntsville Alabama schools.
