Hayward High School News from Hayward High School (Hayward, CA) Hayward High School is the oldest high school in Southern Alameda County. We began serving the community in 1892.

The present site of the school on East Avenue, the third campus in the school’s history, was built in the early 1960’s. Today we offer a comprehensive curriculum with Advanced Placement (AP) courses in all core curricular areas, a full range of core courses, a variety of classes in the visual and performing arts area, including instrumental and vocal music, and vocational courses in Business Educa

tion, Home Economics and Industrial Technology. We have capstone courses with the Eden Area Regional Occupational Program (ROP).

Virgil Hart—Hayward High’s football coach, women’s head basketball coach, and SEL counselor—has been named one of two inaugural Bay Area winners of the Coach Beam Service Award.

The award honors coaches who “lead with heart, purpose and community to transform the lives of student-athletes.”
Virgil has led the football team to a successful record. But he is also well-known for building strong connections to students, and puts an emphasis on academics, mental health, leadership, and personal growth.

One award nominator wrote: “He is committed to developing well-rounded young people who are prepared for life’s challenges.”

The award is bestowed by the Coach Beam’s Legacy Foundation, which was established by the Beam family to honor the life and values of Coach John Beam—a legendary East Bay high school and college coach who passed away tragically last year.

Virgil received the award at a recent Oakland Ballers game. He is shown here with Coach Beam’s two daughters.

Winners receive an individual $7,500 stipend and a $5,000 grant for their athletic program.
