Debate will be in the spotlight in the U.S. Or something we call "debate." May I be brave enough to challenge harmful ideas, curious enough to seek the stories behind those ideas, and continue to love all my neighbors in every space throughout the process.
I'm Really Trying to Be Paul
I just want to know the story. I am asking a genuine question, grounding it as best I can in curiosity rather than snarky judgement. My past...

Current colleagues need not fret - the title is clickbait. This is not a hit piece. It's an honest reflection about the tougher part of being a relational leader -- the tug-of-war we all face but rarely discuss. And it is, ultimately, me unpacking a story I tell myself before we dive into a new Fall semester.
Best wishes to everyone heading into "back to school" mode.
My Most Difficult Relationship at Work
My President started a series of all-administrator meetings in early June - shortly after graduation - with a rather blunt assessment of our...

I wrote this heading into two tough meetings. I want to post it here as we move through a season of Supreme Court decisions, political campaigns, and Pride Month.
I believe in discourse and debate. I believe in the power of persuasion. But first, I listen and love.
Fire and Steel
I'm thinking about two meetings coming up this week where I expect that the changes I will insist upon will meet some strong resistance. It ...

A small sample of the tremendous week that was the Association of California Community College Administrators conference. I'm blessed to have learned from three outstanding keynotes and a whole cohort of Great Deans. I'm proud to work in a district with generous, supportive, and compassionate leaders at every level. Most of all, I am so thankful to stand in community with these wonderful colleagues (and many others at Chabot and .) I appreciate you all so much. Can't wait to dig back into the work with you.

We had a wonderful date night at the gorgeous California Ballroom. Think dinner theater if the play is a re-telling of four classic Poe tales, and the menu is exclusively delicious custom cocktails!

We are looking for great instructors to join the Language Arts faculty at Chabot College, a proud Hispanic Serving Institution.
You can learn more about our opportunities at the CCC Registry Job Fair at the Westin SFO this Saturday from 10am-3pm. I will be there, and I'll be happy to answer your questions.
If you are passionate about teaching, but didn't see many instructors like you in college, I want to meet you on Saturday!

May everyone everywhere stay safe this day, and may we all seek the same world King sought: "a society in which all men (people) will live together as brothers (siblings) and respect the dignity and worth of human personality."

A wonderful evening last night celebrating the FIRST Chabot ESL class hosted by our wonderful partners at Hayward Unified. Thank you for sharing your Hub with us so we can bring college classes to your families. The first in a looooong series, I trust.

Hi friends. Welcome to our new home. Grateful and blessed only begin to describe how we feel. A whirlwind of miracles brought us to this new space. My pics can't capture the wonder and the palpable air of true community. 10 lbs of treats handed out in 90 minutes. 😄
We will steward this land with cariño and share it with all whom we love. So let us know when you're coming to town. ❤

I'm really proud of the ofrenda that our ESL program put together, which others have added to. This year, I'm honoring my mother-in-law Mama Kay, who passed in February but who very much touches our lives to this day.
I'm wearing one of Papa John's blazers for the Altar Walk on campus today. A day to remember that, when community is true, no one ever fully leaves us.
