Today, the Hayward Literacy Plus Council are one with our community in celebrating the beautiful life of Judy Harrison, a phenomenal leader, president of the Friends of the Hayward Library, and a deeply respected pillar of our community.

Judy was a fierce champion for literacy and we were incredibly honored to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with her as partners. Together, we worked tirelessly to raise awareness about the importance of the Library and fight illiteracy.

Judy was more than an ally. She was a brilliant mentor and a constant source of inspiration. Her generosity knew no bounds, and her selfless dedication to the people of Hayward transformed countless lives. We are profoundly grateful for the privilege of knowing her, working alongside her, and serving this beautiful community together. Judy’s legacy will continue to shine brightly through every reader we inspire and every life we touch.

Rest in Heavenly peace, Judy. We will see you in the great sunrise!

Dolly Parton fundamentally understood that access to literature could completely reshape a human life. Deeply moved by her father Robert Lee Parton, an incredibly hardworking man who never had the chance to learn to read or write, she transformed her empathy into action. In 1995, she launched the Dolly Parton's Imagination Library with a revolutionary core belief: every child, regardless of family income, deserves to grow up surrounded by books.

What began as a localized effort in Sevier County, Tennessee, expanded into a massive global movement. The nonprofit has mailed over 270 million books directly to young children across five countries, bridging the literacy gap and cultivating home libraries. Affectionately known as "The Book Lady", Dolly proved that early literacy is a gateway to bigger dreams. Following her passing on August 25, 2026, at the age of 80, her remarkable dual legacy as a music icon and a fierce champion for the freedom to read continues to inspire generations worldwide.

Rest in heavenly peace Dolly. Thank you for your gift of literacy to humanity. ♡
