😎 Meet Transfer Alumni Jose!
-What brought you to Cal State East Bay?
There were many reasons as to what brought me to Cal State East Bay. I made the decision to go back to school back in 2013 and start from scratch. I attended my local community college (Ohlone College) and from there I made the choice to continue my education. However, I took a year off afterwards to make sure I could get into specific programs and get the help required before attending CSUEB. A huge reason to attending Cal State East Bay was that of jointing and being apart of the GANAS Program because it gave me a sense of belonging and community being that I came from the Puente Program and I attended M.E.Ch.A. Club meetings. The big plus was that CSUEB was local to me and just up the hill which meant I could go anywhere in the Bay Area to study, meet up for study sessions, show people around and get away from distractions. If I felt like I was in a funk I could relocated and still be immersed among my peers and community.
-Why did you choose the degree you received ? What would your dream job be?
In all honesty I chose English as my major because I originally wanted to become a high school teacher or community college professor like those who helped me along my educational path. Although that was my dream job, I stuck to my first passion, which was creative writing. Prior to attending CSUEB, I was heavily involved in the open mic community and competing in slam poetry competitions. During that time I wrote a lot of ideas down for short stories, novels, scripts and much more. When I was given the chance to choose English as my major, with a focus in Literature and a minor in Creative Writing, I jumped at the chance. In doing so I was able to be apart of Occam’s Razor twice as a writer and editor. In doing all of this I had a poem and nonfictional story published in a book that won the 2021 International Latino Book Award
