Join Fort Hays State University for a major gift announcement impacting the sizeable Stroup Hall expansion project taking place on campus. The announcement is scheduled for Thursday, August 27, at 3:30 p.m. in the Vicki M. Reed Tiger Welcome Room of FHSU’s Fischli-Wills Center for Student Success.

Attendees will hear from FHSU President Tisa Mason, the Dean of FHSU’s College of Health and Behavioral Sciences, Jeff Briggs, and a few very special guests. Fort Hays State University’s Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) program has been selected by the Association for Writing Across the Curriculum for the 2026 Exemplary WAC Program Award – Established Program, a national recognition honoring outstanding and sustainable WAC initiatives.

FHSU’s WAC program was nominated for the award by Michelle (formerly Cox) Crow of Cornell University. The national award recognizes the university’s sustained commitment to developing a campus-wide culture of writing and supporting student writers across disciplines.

Heart of a Tiger

Home isn’t always the place where you were born. Sometimes, it’s the place where you decide to stay, put down roots, and spend your life making it better. For Jennifer Kaufman, that place is Salina, Kansas, a community she has served for nearly two decades by building programs that improve lives and expand access to mental health care.

For years, Jennifer worked hard and grew in her career. But something was missing. She wanted to go back to school and earn her master's degree in social work. The problem was that life was busy. She was a mom of two young kids, and she had a full-time job.

"When I was 35, I thought, if I'm going to go back to school, I'm going to do it before I turn 40. I need to get it done," Jennifer remembers.

So, at age 36, with her kids just 5 and 8 years old, she applied to Fort Hays State University's online Master of Social Work program and was accepted.

Going back to school is not easy, especially with a full-time job and two kids at home. Jennifer had tried before to get scholarships, but nothing worked out. Then a friend told her about the Northwest Kansas Learn and Live Scholarship, funded by the Dane G. Hansen Foundation. She decided to give it one more try.
