Belknap reservation, and all of our friends. This page is currently hosted by members of the Senior Class, who are working hard to leave a positive legacy behind. Our community members take pride in our school because everyone is a leader in the classroom, on the court, and in the small town of Hays. All of our students lead by example: we have the first Native American student to serve on a student panel for MHSA, to attend a pre-med studies camp at Harvard this spring, or to represent Montana in Washington D.C. Our students strive for excellence. They want to make our school and community a better environment for our future Thunderbirds. The unique thing about the Hays Lodgepole High School is that we are able to be involved with our culture and it has improved our school tremendously. We have daily morning meetings that consists of praying, smudging, doing the pledge of allegiance in Nakoda, Gros Ventre, and English, and playing a traditional song on the school drum. Our area has some beautiful sites to take in, like the Mission Canyon, Hays Powwow Grounds, White Cow Canyon, and some awesome hiking trails. Fort Belknap may have some beautiful site seeing, but what also makes it home is the people and they are welcoming here. Hays is a rural area but we have the IHS clinic, Martin’s grocery store, and Island Mountain Development, if you are looking for a job. Overall, the Hays/Lodge Pole community is very supportive of our students in whatever they do, helping us develop our future leaders, athletes, college students, and community members.

Our Story

Just ask our principle: She is from Louisiana and she left her home to come to work here. After she arrived, she was welcomed by the entire community and was able to take in some of our culture like our annual Hays powwow. Over the school year, she has connected with most of our students.
