FHSU Sociology Program

FHSU Sociology Program Study, understand, and improve society, one class at a time. Sociology is the study of social life and the social causes and consequences of human behavior.

The challenges we face today - changing family structures, cultural diversity, community development, globalization, urbanization, social inequality, terrorism, environmental change, migration – provide students like you with fantastic opportunities. A sociology degree develops strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and prepares you for a variety of rewarding careers where you can ma

ke a lasting impact on the lives of others. The department offers a Bachelor of Science (BS) or Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Sociology, an addictions counseling track options inside either the BS or BA, and many certificate opportunities. Our curriculum allows each student to craft a program of study - providing the theoretical knowledge and applied experiences applicable to both the workplace and advanced academic pursuits. It is a broad, sturdy degree that has prepared students for success in a wide array of graduate degree programs. Our programs are available on-campus and online.

Our Sociology faculty don't just study community, they actively help build and care for it!

We're deeply appreciative of Dr. Kate McGonigal's leadership in the local grief support group, Healing Hearts, which offers strength and support to those navigating life's most difficult moments.

At tonight's meeting from 6:30 PM to 8 PM in the Schmidt Community Center, 2510 Canterbury Drive, Anniston Weber from Options Domestic and Sexual Violence Services will speak to the group about recognizing signs of domestic violence, supporting victims (including older adults), and finding local resources.

All community members are invited. Follow Healing Hearts on Facebook to stay updated on future meetings.

Did someone hit fast-forward on summer?

We can't believe Welcome Weekend is already almost here! While the break was nice, the Quad has definitely felt a little too quiet without our students, and we can't wait to welcome you back to campus. New to Sociology at FHSU? We'd love to chat! Stop by our table at the Back to School picnic to learn about our classes and see how studying society gives you a whole new way of looking at the world!

There are so many activities happening during Welcome Weekend that it can be a bit overwhelming, but we're here to help you every step of the way! If you have any questions, call our office at 785-628-5840, and we'll point you in the right direction!

We can't wait to see you all again soon!
