Are you an FHSU staff or faculty member? If so, you are cordially invited to the Faculty and Staff Community's Fall Social at Las Hefas on August 14th at 5 pm.

The FSC will provide free appetizers and a soft drink for every attendee that RSVP's to the email sent today through Outlook to FHSU staff and faculty. This year, FSC is proud to support the Western Kansas Child Advocacy Center (WKCAC). No special equipment required. It is a session on office yoga and meditation (not mediation 😁) that will be a nice way to interact with colleagues on Zoom as well. Today at 12:00 pm Central in the Memorial Union Smoky Hill Room and Zoom, special guest speaker Dr. John Schmalzbauer from Missouri State University will spark dialogue about religion and spirituality in higher education. The Faculty and Staff Diversity Support Community (FSDSC) welcomes any and all interested members of the university to attend this session.

Today (3/6/25) at 10 am Central on Zoom and the Fischli-Wills Center for Student Success Room 144, the Faculty and Staff Diversity Support Community (FSDSC) will have a session discussing the challenges of maintaining a healthy diet and fitness regimen in a workplace setting where folks are often restricted to working in specific spaces for fixed hours. Guest speakers Nikki Houchen and Dr. Jessica Phelan will share their thoughts on these topics, and you are welcome to join the conversation. If you are curious about and in higher education workplaces, this is the session for you!

Women’s History Month in the United States originated in 1978 as a week-long event started by a California group, the Education Task Force of the Sonoma County Commission on the Status of Women. The Task Force wanted to highlight the frequently overlooked contributions in the field of education and in U.S history that were made by women.

President Jimmy Carter was the first to recognize National Women’s History Week, issuing a presidential proclamation stating in February of 1980 that March 2nd to March 8th would serve as the special week. National Women’s History Week evolved into a month-long observance in 1987 when, after years of advocacy efforts by various groups, Congress passed Public Law 100-9 making March serve as Women’s History Month in national recognition of the impact of women on history, as well as to promote efforts at gender equity. Celebrate this month with the FSDSC!

On February 26th at 12 pm Central, the Faculty and Staff Diversity Support Community (FSDSC) will have a session on strategies to confront grief. There are strategies to address potential emotional, psychological, and physical responses to loss.

In Western Kansas and many other rural areas, resources for mental health are not necessarily readily or easily available for all residents. Guest speaker Dr. Kate McGonigal will discuss these topics and more. Free copies of a grieving journal provided to the first seven in-person attendees.

Before there was Black History Month, there was Negro History Week. Created by historian Dr. Carter Woodson to help address gaps in awareness of the contributions made by Black Americans in the United States, the original week was selected as the week in which Abraham Lincoln was born (February 12th) and when Frederick Douglass was believed to have been born (February 14th).

Gerald Ford expanded the recognition to a month via presidential proclamation in 1976. President Ford called upon all Americans to "seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history." Let us heed the call and recognize how African Americans and Black Americans have been a constant presence in fostering the growth and prosperity of the United States in so many aspects of life.

Today marks the beginning of a new semester. Welcome to new students, staff, and faculty starting at FHSU this semester. While the start of every semester may be daunting at first, always keep in mind that through determination and collaboration, incredible things are possible! Here is to another period of achievement and camaraderie.
