Correct! Faster and faster is not the goal.
At Hope, our goal is for reading to become automatic so students can focus on comprehension, vocabulary, learning new content, and yes—even enjoying a good book for fun.
Do we measure fluency? Absolutely. Fluency is a critical predictor of academic success. But reading fast does not automatically mean a student is fluent.
True fluency is accuracy, automaticity, expression, and understanding working together.
When students are not fluent, reading requires tremendous effort. Their brains are working so hard to crack the code that there is little energy left for comprehension. Reading becomes exhausting instead of enjoyable.
This can lead to frustration, avoidance, low confidence, and students feeling overwhelmed by the amount of time it takes them to complete reading and homework compared to their peers.
Our goal is not to create speed readers. Our goal is to help students become efficient, confident readers who can access learning, understand what they read, and experience the joy and freedom that literacy provides.
Because reading should open doors—not become a barrier to learning.

July 8th—Save the Date
A legend, Jim Lien, a local retired administrator taught me how to treat my staff, students and parents. Now he rocks the bass in retirement.
I still look to his leadership and reflect on what I learned while I was working and learning with him.
He’s a legend.

Yessssss! 🙌 here’s a BIG message:
Sometimes it isn’t the student at all—it can simply be a mismatch in chemistry between staff and student. Not every connection is the right fit, and that’s okay.
And sometimes it IS the behavior. That doesn’t change the truth that every child is born good, worthy, and deserving of respect.
Our job as educators is to search for the glimmers, water them, and help them grow. We can hold high expectations while also believing in a child’s potential. Those two things can coexist.
Every child deserves a fresh start, a clean slate, and a teacher who looks for their strengths before their struggles. When students feel seen, valued, and believed in, amazing things can happen. ❤️
Hopefully, if we do our job well, we pass students on to the next teacher a little stronger, a little more confident, and a little better equipped than when they arrived.
The world is hard and broken enough, be the light and choose to find their positive areas to grow and stretch, while honoring their struggles and area of need. —
With love,
Ms. Honey 🍯

The best part? Running into former Hope (Skyway, Woodland, etc) families years later and hearing about all the incredible things their children are doing.
The reading scores, math facts, and report cards matter—but seeing students grow into confident, successful young adults is the real win. ❤️

Love this quote. Including others and accommodating learners doesn’t have to be complicated.

We have added two GEMS to our summer line-up: Ben Dodson and Jacque Watson! 💎
Both Ben and Jacque have outstanding reputations for the way they connect with, encourage, and support students. They understand that meaningful growth happens when students feel seen, valued, and capable.
At Hope, it’s incredibly important that our staff bring positive energy, deep expertise in their passion areas, and the ability to motivate learners while rebuilding confidence in students who may have experienced struggles or setbacks along the way.
We are proud of the team we’ve built and confident that our students are in excellent hands this summer.
Our team is ready for the handoff—and ready to help students grow, succeed, and discover what they’re capable of.

Here’s a hard truth: 😬
Homeschooling is a whole lot easier when your child can read independently.
Talking develops naturally for most children. Reading does not.
Reading is a learned skill that requires explicit teaching, practice, and patience. Most children benefit from direct instruction in phonemic awareness, letter sounds, phonics, handwriting, spelling, and reading practice to build a strong literacy foundation.
The good news?
When we invest in these foundational skills, we’re not just teaching a child to read—we’re giving them access to every other area of learning.
For homeschool curricula, we encourage families to look for structured literacy programs that thoroughly teach and provide practice to mastery in the foundational skills. If your family homeschools for Christian reasons, consider supplementing with biblical readers and faith-based content while ensuring your core reading instruction follows the science of reading and teaches students HOW to crack the literacy code.
Because once a child can read independently, the world opens up.
The sky is the limit when you are literate.

Sight Word Beat the Teacher was in full swing, and we are sorry to report that Ms. Honey went down in flames. 🔥
This reading rockstar mastered her sight words, beat the teacher fair and square, and walked away with the victory (and a BONUS prize box) .
At Hope, we celebrate every hard-earned win because confidence grows when students see what they can do! This sweet girl proved that practice pays off and hard work wins.
Way to go, superstar! Keep making those sight words surrender one card at a time!

I can’t stress enough what a transformative training Making Sense of Your Worth is. So many of us were taught to earn our worth by performing, pleasing, fixing, achieving, or carrying everyone else’s emotions. This training helps untangle those messages and reminds you that your worth was never something you had to earn in the first place. It is powerful work.
