What actually happens to concrete when it's poured into deep foundations with complex, multi-layer steel cages?

The EFFC/DFI Concrete Task Group partnered with Swansea University to model the exact flow mechanisms, aiming to better understand the this mechanism and determine how to reduce problems during construction.

This video on 'Flow Mechanisms of Tremie Concrete through Multi-Layer Reinforcement in Deep Foundations: Insights from Numerical Parametric Studies' presents the results of their work identifying flow mechanisms in complex reinforcement systems, specifically, multi-layer reinforcement in deep foundation elements.

🌊Rising sea levels, increased storm intensity and changes in groundwater systems have increased hydrostatic pressures, uplift forces and corrosion potential for foundations, retaining walls, slope stabilization systems, waterfront structures and concrete dams.

Many of these structures rely on permanent post-tensioned ground anchors installed 30–60 years ago, when such environmental issues and conditions were not anticipated. While these systems were developed with the standards and knowledge available at the time, they were often based on assumptions that no longer reflect current or projected conditions.

Following his nearly 40-year-long career, Lucian Bogdan, recently retired as chief engineer of the geotechnical business unit at Dywidag, looks the evolution in anchor technology and what the future may hold in the July/August issue of magazine.
