HAWTHORNE, NJ — Hawthorne Public Schools will introduce a new digital Spanish language program for elementary students this fall as part of an update to the district's curriculum.

During the July 21 Board of Education meeting, Trustee Erica Mulkey-Koltzan said the district will begin using a program called Language Bridge as its primary method of Spanish instruction for students in the second and fourth grades.

"It's a digital platform that uses headphones and microphones to replace our Spanish program in those grades," Mulkey-Koltzan said

I can’t believe how fast three years have gone! It’s official, I just handed in my petition to rerun for the Hawthorne board of education! This year I will be the only incumbent running, sadly. The board of education is a non partisan volunteer elected position that is only good for three years.
I hope I have made everyone proud the last three years, especially this past year being elected the vice president in order to have your continued support and to vote again in November for me! Erica Mulkey - Koltzan Hawthorne Board of Education. Erica Mackenzie

Edison integrated educator and Hawthorne Board of Education Vice President Erica Mulkey delivered an inspiring speech to the middle school graduating class of 2026, and handed out diplomas to the high school graduates! 🎓

Erica said, “It was an honor to come full circle, as I graduated from Hawthorne High in 2002.”

We are so proud to have our FLEA members involved in all facets of education!

What an honor it continues to be! Last night, I had the privilege of handing out diplomas to the Hawthorne High School graduating class of 2026! I still can't believe I get to be a part of this momentous occasion, one that signifies the passing of the torch to the next generation. Having spent my entire youth in the district and graduating from this very school in 2002, it's truly surreal to now hand diplomas to the future leaders. The experience is indescribable, but I'd say it's a highlight of my life, reaffirming the value of hard work and dedication to the Hawthorne school board. It's moments like these that remind us what drives us forward. I'm eager to continue serving the students, staff, and community of Hawthorne, inspired by the potential for positive impact. I'm living proof that the spirit of Hawthorne stays with you forever - Once a Bear, Always a BEAR! 🐻

Tonight, I was humbled by the privilege of addressing the Lincoln Middle School Graduates, and what a tremendous honor it was to inspire these distinguished graduates, their loving families, and the entire community. I emphasized the profound significance of being a Bear, highlighting the immense fortune we have in being nurtured in Hawthorne, where every neighbor, classmate, and teacher extends into a lifelong family bond. This occasion has undoubtedly been the pinnacle of my tenure on the Hawthorne Board of Education, leaving me grateful for the blessing of this role. How truly blessed am I to speak at my alma mater?
