I may have had the cutest student ever in class today! 🐾 This sweet service dog attended CPR class with their person and was, without question, the best-behaved student in the room. Sat quietly, listened closely, and didn’t interrupt once. Definitely earned a passing grade—and a few extra treats! ❤️

FAMILY SAFETY: SUMMER EDITION

As a CPR and First Aid instructor, I get asked about the LifeVac ALL THE TIME.

Would I own one?

Absolutely.

LifeVac is now FDA-authorized as a second-line treatment when standard choking rescue methods have been attempted and have not worked.

That said, it doesn't replace knowing what to do in a choking emergency.

Remember:
✅ Call 911
✅ Follow recommended choking rescue techniques
✅ Start CPR if needed

I believe in layers of protection. Learn the skills, be prepared, and have the tools you hope you'll never need.

🚨 Heimlich Maneuver Day & a BIG 2025 Update! 🚨

Many of us learned that if someone is choking, we should immediately start abdominal thrusts (the Heimlich maneuver).

✅ As of the 2025 American Heart Association Guidelines, that's changed.

For a conscious choking adult or child with a severe airway blockage:

➡️ Give 5 back blows
➡️ Then give 5 abdominal thrusts
➡️ Continue alternating 5 back blows and 5 abdominal thrusts until the object is expelled or the person becomes unresponsive.

The goal is to use the back blows to help loosen the obstruction before the abdominal thrusts help force it out.

💡 A few important reminders:
• If they can cough or speak, encourage coughing.
• Call 911 for severe choking.
• If they become unresponsive, begin CPR.
• Infants under 1 year old are different: use 5 back blows and 5 chest thrusts — never abdominal thrusts.

It's amazing how a simple guideline change can save lives. When was the last time you updated your CPR and First Aid training?
