The first stage of walking the circle might be considered standing on the circle. In Yin Yuzhang's book, Baguazhang Jian Lun (A Simple Book on Baguazhang), Yin advises the student to start in a standing position, rotate the body about 135 degrees, extend one hand and keep the other close, and hold that position. (It's more complicated, but this a summary.) This is the movement of Zhan Zhuang (standing practice). Yin calls this the Walking Palm posture.
Next comes movement around the circle. At this stage the student practices Yang Sheng Zhuan Zhang Ba Shi (8 Energy Circle Walking) in which each of 8 different postures are held while walking around the circle. This improves the student's energy circulation. Click here for a list of the names of the postures.

In the next stage the student walks the circle in the Walking Palm posture.

Then the student walks the circle performing the Ji Ben Zhuan Zhang Ba Shi (The Basic Circle Walk with 8 Changes) using different palms.
