The Boston University Wheelock office of Strategic Partnerships & Community Engagement (SPACE) is thrilled to host the second webinar in the series Research that Matters: Insights from Community Engaged Scholarship. Through a series of compelling conversations, this webinar aims to translate cutting-edge scholarship into accessible, practical knowledge and foster stronger connections between researchers, policymakers, and community practitioners on February 13th, 2025 from 3:30pm-4:15pm EST.
Learning Their Language: How Parents of Deaf Children Learn to Sign will feature a conversation between Amy Lieberman (Associate Professor, BU Wheelock), Elana Pontecorvo (Doctoral Student, BU Sargent College), and Julie Mitchiner (Professor, Gallaudet University), moderated by Stacy Abrams (Founder, ). The panelists will be discussing their recent research, Hearing parents as sign language learners: describing and evaluating the ASL skills of parents learning ASL with their deaf children.
About this study: This study explores the misconception that hearing parents cannot achieve sufficient sign language proficiency to support their deaf child's language development. Researchers found this belief to be at odds with evidence from parents who have learned American Sign Language upon finding out that they have a deaf child. Motivated by a simple idea—to counter the narrative that hearing parents cannot learn to sign—this study takes a responsive approach to understanding and addressing this misconception. Researchers recruited hearing parents with deaf children to understand where and how they learned to sign, what was most successful in learning (and what barriers they faced), what beliefs they held about sign language, and what level of proficiency they achieved. This research highlights the pathways and real-world successes of sign language use in families.
The webinar will be accessible in both ASL and English. Register via Zoom through the link tree link in the bio.
