One of Santa’s helpers, Kevin Moore, of Saggahew Lodge in Haverhill visited Tory this Christmas Eve, whose late grandfather, Richard Kneeland, was a member of Charles C. Dame Lodge in Georgetown. Just one example of how Freemasons everywhere look to make the world a little bit kinder every day.

Brethren, families, and widows of Saggahew Lodge,

As we gather around our tables this Thanksgiving, my heart turns with deep gratitude to each of you who make Saggahew Lodge a true home in the heart of Haverhill. For nearly two centuries, our Lodge has stood in this old river city, where the Merrimack has carried the hopes and hard work of generations before us.

Long before there was a city called Haverhill, this place was known as Pentucket — “the place of the winding river.” The land was purchased from Native leaders Passaquo and Saggahew, whose name our Lodge proudly bears. In time, Haverhill grew from a small settlement into a bustling industrial town, its mills and shoe factories earning it the name “Queen Slipper City.” Through all those years of change, men of this community have come together as Masons to improve themselves, support their neighbors, and quietly keep the light of brotherly love, relief, and truth burning in this corner of the Merrimack Valley.

Freemasonry has always asked more of a man than simply attendance — it asks for reflection, for service, and for a steady heart. Our rituals teach us that every stone can be shaped and refined, just as every Brother strives to perfect the rough ashlar of his own character. In the Lodge, we are reminded that titles fade, fortunes change, and circumstances shift, but virtue, charity, and fidelity remain eternal.

We are connected not only by shared traditions, but by shared purpose. Freemasonry has given us a language of symbols and a foundation of moral instruction that speaks across generations. It binds us in ways that words alone cannot — through trust, obligation, and a sincere commitment to be better men tomorrow than we are today. These lessons strengthen our families, uplift our communities, and guide our actions when no one is watching.

Today, we are heirs to that legacy. We give thanks for the Brothers who labor in our Lodge, for the families who support and strengthen us, and for the widows of our departed Brethren, who remain forever a cherished part of our Masonic family. You remind us that our obligations do not end at the Tyler’s door or at the close of a meeting, but live on in every call, every visit, every kind word, and every act of quiet generosity.

On this Thanksgiving, may we remember those who are alone, those facing hardship, and those who are no longer at our tables but live on in our hearts and in the Grand Architect’s eternal care. May our gratitude move us to action — to be better neighbors in Haverhill, to lend a hand where there is need, and to ensure that Saggahew Lodge continues to be a source of warmth and hope in this historic city we are blessed to call home.

From our Lodge to your homes, may your day be filled with peace, good health, and the love of family and friends. May the Grand Architect of the Universe watch over you and keep you in His care, this Thanksgiving and always.
