Dear Parents,
What an amazing week it has been at camp! Our students have immersed themselves in the worlds of music and art, discovering the fascinating connections between history, creativity, and performance while preparing for tomorrow's Family Concert.
This Week in Music History:
Students learned about the lives, music, and lasting influence of many of history's greatest composers, including Franz Schubert, Niccolò Paganini, Frédéric Chopin, Franz Liszt, Felix Mendelssohn, Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, Gabriel Fauré, César Franck, Édouard Lalo, Georges Bizet, Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel, Isaac Albéniz, Manuel de Falla, David Popper, Pablo de Sarasate, and Vittorio Monti.
Students explored the rich musical traditions of France and Spain, including the influence of Flamenco on classical music.
They listened to outstanding performances by world-renowned musicians while learning how each composer's unique style influenced the development of classical music.
Dr. Alexander also shared a wonderful collection of professional performances for students and families
This Week in Art:
Students began the week exploring Impressionism, learning how artists captured light, color, and atmosphere while listening to Chopin's Nocturnes and Debussy's Images. They created Impressionist Still Life drawings using oil pastels, painting the emotions and imagery they heard in the music.
Students explored the evolution of Romanticism in music, discovering how composers used melody, harmony, and expressive techniques to communicate powerful emotions and tell compelling musical stories.
Students then studied French Post-Impressionism and the Russian Avant-Garde, exploring how artists experimented with bold color, expressive brushwork, symbolism, and innovative artistic ideas
Students concluded the week by studying Modernism, learning how artists challenged traditional styles through abstraction, geometry, and imaginative design. Inspired by Paul Klee, they created colorful Cubist Cityscapes, experimenting with shape, perspective, and vibrant color combinations.
A Unique Learning Experience:
Throughout the week, students experienced the remarkable connection between music and visual art, discovering how composers and artists inspired one another across different artistic movements.
The level of teaching, the depth of the curriculum, and the artistic experiences your children are receiving at such a young age are truly extraordinary. They are building a strong foundation in both music history and art history that will benefit them for years to come.
Your children have created beautiful works of art throughout the week, and we hope you enjoy seeing their projects on display!
Family Concert Summary:
We are excited to share your children's hard work and accomplishments with you.
Before the concert, students will also have the opportunity to hear graduating senior Chloe Chen perform selections from her Senior Recital before she begins her studies at Cornell University!
Looking Ahead:
Regular Summer Semester lessons will resume the week of July 13.
We encourage students to continue their lessons around their vacations, as well as practicing over some of the weeks of the summer to build on everything they have learned this year!
Our camp students should continue the wonderful momentum established during camp, as in practicing 2 hours per day!:)
We loved having your children with us this week! Watching them grow as musicians, artists, and young scholars has been a true joy. We are so happy for them to have had this chance to learn the most extraordinary information, which will make them ace their college art and music classes!
