Hot afternoon, big reward on the Neuse! 🎣☀️
Had a trip this afternoon with a couple of ladies from church and one of their grandkids. We got off to a little bit of a late start after base PMO got pretty excited about where I had docked 😂, but about 30 minutes later we were finally on our way.
We headed out to the river, found what little wind we could, and set up shop. The boys took turns casting while bait was getting worked all around us. Then BANG! The reel started screaming.
Got Keaton on the stick, and he went to work. He stayed patient, worked that fish hard and steady, and eventually won the battle.
His first old drum! 🔥
That never gets old. Watching someone feel the power of one of these fish for the first time is one of my favorite parts of being on the water. We got a measurement, put a tag in her, grabbed a quick picture, and watched her swim off strong. Release Over 20
The kids probably made a few hundred more casts trying to find another one, but it just wasn’t happening. We finished with a 16-inch red, a 24-inch red, and the tank.
Not bad at all for an extremely hot August afternoon. As the sun started dropping, the temperature finally got comfortable and the bite seemed like it was starting to warm up, but we had a curfew to beat back in.
One big fish was all we needed anyway.
Another first old drum on the Neuse and another memory that’ll be hard to beat. 🎣🤙
