As leaders, it’s easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of daily tasks, emails, meetings, and administrative duties. But are we focusing on the work that truly moves the needle? Enter the 80/20 rule, or the Pareto Principle, which states that roughly 80% of outcomes result from 20% of efforts.
Imagine two leaders:
1️⃣ Leader A is perpetually busy, jumping from one low-impact task to another. Their day is a blur of inbox zero goals, attending meetings that could’ve been emails, and getting lost in processes. Despite working long hours, their impact is marginal because their time is consumed by tasks that don’t drive significant results.
2️⃣ Leader B, on the other hand, applies the 80/20 rule. They intentionally evaluate their workload and prioritize the critical 20% of activities that generate 80% of their success. For them, this means focusing on strategic planning, relationship building, decision-making, and mentoring their team. While their calendar might not look as jam-packed as Leader A’s, their outcomes are far more impactful.
The takeaway? Being busy is not the same as being effective. Leaders need to regularly audit their tasks and ask:
• Does this contribute to our strategic goals?
• Can this be delegated or automated?
• Am I focusing on high-impact activities or simply reacting to low-priority demands?
By shifting your attention to the work that matters most, you’ll not only achieve better results but also set an example for your team to focus on impact over busyness.
