At the same time we see this surge of interest in prediction markets, we see a heightened interest in improv, which is not about predictability at all. But it tracks, because improv generates the unique skill set needed to manage in a world of uncertainty, when old rules, structures, and institutions are breaking down. The Wall Street Journal recently published a piece about how improv is the creative method used by the Alan Alda Center For Communicating Science to train scientists to communicate clearly and powerfully about their work and build greater trust with the public. In March, Health Care Business Today described improv as “the next frontier in health care team performance” because of its emphasis on “greater presence, empathy, and adaptability,” and the way it deepens engagement between people. In her Forbes article “Collaboration Without Character? Improv Shows The Cracks” researcher Mary Crossan explains that today’s organizations “operate far more like improvisational ensembles than scripted productions,” and describes the link between improvisation experiences and the development of character, with emphasis on dimensions such as “courage, humility, temperance, transcendence, humanity, and collaboration.” The link to my Substack is in bio.
