August 20 – Happy Birthday, CMSAF Eric Benken

Today we celebrate the birthday of CMSAF Eric Benken, the 12th Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force.

During his tenure, Benken helped guide the Air Force into the expeditionary era while placing renewed emphasis on enlisted professional development and Airmen’s identity.

Among his lasting contributions were helping introduce the Air Force Core Values, publishing the Little Blue Book, and championing the change from Senior Enlisted Advisor to Command Chief Master Sergeant—a title still used across the Air Force today.

His influence continues to be felt in the values, leadership, and culture that shape today’s enlisted force.

HWO #5: “Pits.” Nine rounds representing nine lives A1C William “Bill” Pitsenbarger helped save during a battle in Vietnam.

Some HWOs are harder than others. This one sits on the harder end of the spectrum. Let’s see what you got!

A1C Pitsenbarger was serving aboard “Pedro 73,” an HH-43 Husky, on April 11, 1966, when an infantry company of 134 Soldiers was surrounded near Saigon and casualties began to mount.

Rather than remain aboard the helicopter, Pits volunteered to descend into the fight. On the ground, he helped organize and expedite the evacuation of the wounded, enabling the helicopters to extract nine Soldiers over multiple sorties.

As the battle worsened, he had opportunities to leave, but he stayed.

Pits remained with the infantrymen, treated the wounded, helped redistribute ammunition and fought alongside them until he was mortally wounded.

Those nine rounds in HWO #5 represent the nine wounded Soldiers evacuated during the battle.

The workout is a small way to connect physical effort with Air Force heritage. More importantly, it is a way to remember an Airman whose courage showed what it looks like to stay when others need you most.
