Last week, our 30 AmeriCorps Teacher Residents came together for AmeriCorps Orientation as they begin a year of service across 11 Mississippi school districts! This year’s cohort includes 18 graduate students and 12 undergraduate students, all bringing their unique experiences and perspectives to the classrooms and communities they serve.

Throughout the day, residents learned about the history and mission of AmeriCorps, the rules and expectations that guide their service, National Days of Service, and the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award. They also participated in an interactive gallery walk focused on their Volunteer Service Agreements, using collaborative discussion to explore their individual commitments and what those commitments look like in practice.

We were also honored to welcome Jin Joo Crosby, Director of National Service Programs at Volunteer Mississippi, who helped our residents better understand the broader movement they are now a part of.

It was an interactive, collaborative, and informative day, and we’re excited to see how these 30 residents will serve, lead, and make an impact in classrooms and communities across Mississippi this year. ❤️💙

30 residents. 11 school districts. One shared commitment to service.

Our Executive Director and Teacher Residency Program Coordinator spent a few days in Jackson this week attending AmeriCorps Program Staff Training with Volunteer Mississippi!

This year, AmeriCorps funding provides living stipends and other supports for two of our teacher residency programs: 18 graduate AmeriCorps members enrolled in the MAT in Inclusive Elementary Education and 12 undergraduate AmeriCorps members enrolled in the BS in Elementary Education.

We’re excited to officially launch this service term with volunteer orientation next week as our residents settle into their residency placements and prepare to serve students throughout the coming year.

This week was a great reminder that service is happening all across Mississippi and throughout our country. We’re proud to be part of a movement, not just a moment!

Big shout-out to our AmeriCorps Graduate Residents who are wrapping up their service year with attendance at the Making Connections Conference! Through networking, professional learning, and collaboration with educators and leaders from across the state, they gained valuable experiences that will strengthen their impact as they step into their classrooms as new teachers this fall. We're excited to see how they put these insights into action in their schools and communities!

This week, we celebrate the educators who inspire, guide, and shape future generations every single day.

At our Center, we are especially grateful for the opportunity to support the next generation of teachers through student teaching placements, residencies, and apprenticeship pathways.
