CMCB Faculty Spotlight ๐Ÿ”Ž: Dr. Jacques Kessl is an Associate Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Southern Miss and Program Coordinator of Mississippi INBRE. Research in Dr. Kessl's lab focuses on understanding the intricate molecular mechanisms of HIV replication, using a combination of biochemistry, biophysics and ex vivo approaches to discover critical interactions in order to devise novel molecular strategies capable of blocking viral replication.

Newly found inhibitors emerging from these studies can serve as powerful molecular probes to observe unknown aspects of viral biology, in turn revealing new unexploited targets. Dr. Kessl has discovered that pursuing these two research directions simultaneously, viral biochemistry and antiviral drug discovery, maximizes scientific productivity.

Dr. Kessl has been continuously funded at the highest level by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) since 2011. He was recently awarded a competitive R01 research grant totaling $1.8M to continue his HIV research.
