USM English

The English department at Southern Miss offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in all primary fields of literary studies as well as fiction and poetry.

Composed of many award-winning scholars, writers, and teachers, the diverse faculty of the Department of English is dedicated to producing and expanding knowledge of literature and writing through research or creative activity and to offering a comprehensive array of courses that prepare students to read, write, think, and communicate critically and creatively. The department is committed to all a

reas of the discipline and curriculum: literature, fiction & poetry writing, composition and professional writing, and English education. The undergraduate English and English licensure majors provide students with the tools needed to explore works of literature, read texts critically, write persuasively and creatively, and teach language arts. The course of study begins with an intense survey of the critical approaches
and questions germane to the study of literature in English. Students then examine the major
works, authors, and literary movements that constitute literary history, including both the traditional and the newer canons of the discipline, as well as works by racially and ethnically diverse writers. Students can choose to concentrate in literature, creative writing, English education, or professional writing and public discourse. Our undergraduate program prepares students well for graduate/professional schools or careers in writing, publishing and editing, government and law, business, public relations and advertising, and education. More than one-third of our undergraduate students pursue the English with licensure degree in preparation for serving as secondary school teachers. Our nationally recognized graduate program offers both master’s and doctoral degrees with an emphasis in literature or creative writing, as well as a master’s degree with an emphasis in English education. The department presents students with the opportunity to specialize in all primary fields of literary studies and provides especially strong offerings in contemporary literature and theory, creative writing, and children’s literature. Students work with innovative faculty and experience both traditional classroom instruction and an array of extracurricular and experiential learning opportunities, from monthly readings of creative work to domestic travel and study abroad courses.

Congratulations to USM’s Alpha Nu Gamma Chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, whose Monthly Book Club was awarded the Regents' Common Reader Award, 2023. The chapter was recognized for its lively discussions and outreach in the support of reading and literary appreciation of Sigma Tau Delta’s 2023 Convention Common Reader: The Rock Eaters, by Brenda Peynado. An honorarium was also awarded to the chapter.
