Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) is an evidence-based, interprofessional, and multidisciplinary training program that equips the entire maternity care team with skills to effectively manage obstetric emergencies. This comprehensive course encourages a standardized team-based approach amongst physicians, residents, nurse midwives, registered nurses and other members of the maternity care team to improve patient safety and positively impact maternal outcomes.

Kicking off the school year with Orientation for the WCUCOM Class of 2030! We are excited about this class and can’t wait to see what they accomplish. It’s going to be a great year.

Harless named CNATRA Flight Surgeon of the Year

Lieutenant Tyler Harless has been selected as the Chief of Naval Air Training (CNATRA) Flight Surgeon of the Year award. He is attached to Training Air Wing ONE and serves at Naval Air Station Meridian’s medical clinic.

“Receiving this award is a great honor and makes me feel that the hard work and effort being put in year-round at NAS Meridian is being recognized by CNATRA,” he said.

A native of Byram, Mississippi, Harless attended Jones County Junior College before obtaining his Bachelor of Science from The University of Southern Mississippi. He then attended William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine where he obtained his medical degree as a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.)

Harless was commissioned with the U.S. Navy in 2018 through the Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP) and entered the Individual Ready Reserves while in medical school for four years. He has been active duty for four years.

CAPT Sylvester Foley, commodore of Training Air Wing One, had this to say, “Lieutenant Harless has been an indispensable part of Training Air Wing ONE. His dedication to our pilots, exceptional medical expertise, and steadfast support of flight operations have been instrumental in our ability to safely accomplish the mission. I am grateful for his service and proud to see him recognized as the CNATRA Flight Surgeon of the Year.”

The training wings often go on detachments to different locations around the country to complete required training. Harless spent 80 days on detachment while being the only flight surgeon for four months and being the only medical officer for all of NAS Meridian for two months during fiscal year 2025. During that time, Harless completed more than 1,300 patient encounters and obtained 34 flight hours.

CDR Traci Tullius, officer-in-charge of Naval Branch Health Clinic Meridian, believes LT Harless earned the honor for one reason – “his unmatched dedication.”

“As the sole physician in the clinic, he single-handedly carries the workload of four providers, while also seamlessly maintaining medical coverage during aviator detachments. Furthermore, when faced with severe staffing shortages and deprived of standard aviation medical technician support, he proactively trained and supervised two hospital corpsmen to fill the capability gap. His exceptional work ethic, resourcefulness, and tireless devotion to the health of our aviators make him an indispensable asset to NAS Meridian and our clinic, and the absolute right choice for this prestigious honor.”

CNATRA annually recognizes outstanding aeromedical professionals who provide exceptional medical support to student naval aviators and instructors. The recipient is selected for their proactive role in addressing health and safety issues while actively improving the quality of training.

We were honored to be in attendance for Carey President Ben Burnett’s brother Dr. Walter Burnett’s inauguration as President of the Mississippi Academy of Family Physicians. Dr. Burnett has served Yazoo City as a family medicine physician for over 30 years. We thank him for his support of our program and being a mentor to our students. We look forward to the next year of his servant leadership of this incredible organization.
