George Bufkin, Gary Wildman, and Shelby Thames formulated plans for the first International Waterborne and Higher-Solids symposium and secured support of the co-sponsor, The Southern Society for Coatings Technology. Since that time, the symposium has been an annual event in New Orleans, LA. Today, after 38 years, the symposium is known as the International Waterborne, High-Solids, and Powder Coati

ngs Symposium and continues to serve the international coatings community by offering presentations and short courses on the latest technological advances, emphasizing the need for environmental protecting and high performance. The first symposium consisted of seven presentations by industry leaders such as Union Carbide and Shell Chemical Company. This year, the 38th annual symposium consisted of 52 high quality presentations in eight different fields of coatings research. The European Coatings Journal review in their March ‘99 issue described the Symposium as, ”...North America’s most prestigious conference in the field of paints and coatings.”

The symposium proceeds are extremely important to the University as they are used for recruitment of, and scholarships for, undergraduate and graduate degree polymer scientists as well as program support. To date, The University of Southern Mississippi has conferred approximately 700 undergraduate and graduate degrees in Polymer Science and Polymer Science and Engineering. A major factor in our successful recruitment of high-ability students is the scholarships provided by the coatings industry. And for that, we are grateful and offer our thanks to all who have supported our endeavors. The Waterborne Symposium – helping shape the future of coatings research and education for 38 years.
