While it is primarily designed for homeschool families, it is open to those without access to the performing arts.

Homeschool Band FAQ's
Q: What age can my child start band?
A: Students must be in at least fifth grade or at least 10 years old to join band. Exceptions are rare but can be discussed with the director.
โโ-
Q: Does my child need experience to join the band?
A: No. Our beginners are just that, beginners. Students will learn everything about their instrument, how to play it, and how to read music while in class.
โโ-
Q: What instruments are in the band?
A: The band will consist of woodwind (flute, clarinet, saxophone) and brass (trumpet, trombone) instruments.
โโ-
Q: Do you teach drum set?
A: No. Drum set instruction can be acquired through private lessons from many teachers around town.
โโ-
Q: How do I obtain an instrument?
A: Instruments may be borrowed from family and friends and bought/rented from local businesses (Music & Arts is great).
Please contact the director before purchasing or renting an instrument as there are many instruments available that are not fit to play.
Unless acquired through Music & Arts, every instrument must be inspected prior to being used in class. This is to insure that your child is setup for success rather than frustration due to a poorly functioning instrument.
โโ-
Q: What instrument is best for my child?
A: A short meeting (instrument fitting) with the director can help you find the best instrument for your child. Things to consider are size of the child compared to the instrument, and hand/eye coordination of the child. All beginners will get to try every instrument to see which one they enjoy most. The director will make a final decision on which instrument is best suited for your child based on probable success and availability.
โโ-
Q: When and where do you rehearse?
A: The band will meet Fridays on the campus of William Carey University in MPB (see campus map) with a time to be determined soon (most likely before lunch).
โโ-
Q: What does band cost?
A: There is an annual band fee of $50/student. This covers the cost of method books, SmartMusic subscriptions, and music. Tuition will be paid on a ten week, trimester basis (3 terms per year). Tuition is $75 per term. A discount of $25 is available for paying annually. There is also a discount for multiple students: 1st child is $75/term, 2nd child is $50/term, and 3rd (or more) child is $25/term.
We want band to be available to everyone and we feel that this keeps costs down as much as possible. Contact Dr. Hardin if cost is an issue.
โโ-
Q: Can parents participate with their children?
A: Absolutely! Parents are welcome to attend rehearsals and learn right along with their children. Parents only need to register and pay the band fee. Tuition is free!

If you know of any homeschool families who might be interested in joining the homeschool band this Fall as a beginner, please have them reach out to me directly on Facebook!
Fall classes begin September 2!
Parents, I emailed invoices for band fees last night. If you did not receive an email from me either:
1. I don't have your correct email address (or at all)
2. It went to SPAM
3. I have already received payment for your band fees.
Please reach out to me if you did not receive the invoice. You can pay via credit card, debit card, or even bank account. This is going to be a much better system than sending through PayPal.
Looking forward to our first rehearsal tomorrow!!!!

Don't forget that tonight is instrument fitting for those who have not done so already.
I value everyone's time, and based on Tuesday's meeting, it may be helpful to follow the schedule below; however, families will be fitted in order of arrival regardless.
Last name A-G: 6:00
Last name H-N: 6:25
Last name O-Z: 6:50
I hope to go as quickly as possible but don't want anyone waiting needlessly.
