YOU NEED DISABILITY INCLUSIVE BOOKS IN YOUR HOME! ♿️
And here's why...according to a study done in 2019 by the Cooperative Children’s Book Center, only 3.4% of children’s literature features disabled m main characters. For perspective, the CDC finds that 26% of Americans identify with having a disability, with the percentage actually being higher in the south. See a problem?
So what's the book all about?
Josiah’s Big Day is a story about a young student who uses a power wheelchair that is left out of his school’s field day activities. Josiah and his friends, Cami, Samantha, and Charlie, notice that there are not any games or activities available for students who use wheelchairs, like Josiah. The concerned group of five students take it upon themselves to talk to the teacher in charge of planning field day, express their concern over the lack of inclusive activities, and present an alternative list of activities that are inclusive. Through the power of teamwork, these four friends, or the "CapABLE Crew," Josiah, as well as all the other students who use wheelchairs or similar equipment, will be able to experience inclusivity and participate in all the games on field day.
I'm in! Where can I find the book?

On International Day of Persons with Disabilities, we want to celebrate how far we have come as a society in terms of accessibility, but also acknowledge how far we have to go.
Accessibility takes everyone - those with disabilities and those without disabilities. Educate yourself, equip others, and empower all.

Did you know…CapABLE offers two different character education curricula for teachers?
The first is for K-3 students and the second is for grades 4-6 and has a STEM focus.
Each program is five days and includes an story, activity, and critical thinking section. The STEM edition was developed to create an awareness and understanding of how these elements of academia are intertwined in inclusion and everyday life.
