We have some exciting new additions to the Exercise Science department. We finished a brand new lab last spring and it is fully operational for the new school year! We have a suite of new anatomical models for our courses as well. Our lab contains a Parvomedics metabolic cart, a Biopac digital testing suite for EMG, EKG, EEG, and pulmonary measures. We purchased a 65 inch 4k smart TV to display our scientific equipment during class labs. We also have repurposed our old lab into a new teaching and testing lab! Lots of exciting new things coming to Hastings College!

On Sunday, the Hastings College Special Olympics Powerlifting team completed their final practice of the year with a powerlifting contest!

Thank you for all of the hard work by our undergraduate students who work diligently and compassionately to teach and train our Special Olympic athletes. We have six student coaches including Brock Buresh, Jonah Doyle, Matthew Johanson, Kiernan Paulk, Olivia Kugler, and Alyse Anderson. We teach and train 9 total athletes from the surrounding communities.

Thank you for the great year coaches and athletes!

We had 3 graduating seniors from exercise science get selected as royalty in the May Fete court. May Fete is a long-running, student-planned event dating back to May 1, 1910.
Congrats Ikeah Cuff (bottom left), Trystan Soby (top right), and Sofia Gomez-Garcia (second from the right, bottom row)!

Today we finished out the year with our Special Olympics team competition. We had some amazing lifts including a 260 pound squat from Jason, and 160 pound deadlifts from both Moyer and Sean! We also had a 70 pound personal best bench press (not pictured) from Spencer, a young man who suffered a brain injury as a teenager and has fought back to being able to be a powerlifting athlete! A special thanks to all of our student coaches: DJ Schroeder, Alyse Anderson, Carley Leners

Yesterday, the Exercise Physiology class took advantage of the sunshine and did an activity outdoors to simulate the impact of asthma on heart rate and exercise performance. Students stepped up and down at given rates and used heart rate monitors to see the physiological effect of asthma. Students did this normally first, then used straws and nose clips to only breath through a small opening to simulate asthma while exercising.
The Hastings College PEHP department uses hands on learning environments like this to teach health and exercise related topics to our students!
