Mishkan Ha'am Reconstructionist

Mishkan Ha'am Reconstructionist We are a growing community dedicated to serving as a bridge between the search for religious identity and the demands of the secular world.

Welcome to Mishkan Ha'am! We're a growing community dedicated to serving as a bridge between the search for religious identity and the demands of the secular world. As a Reconstructionist congregation, we integrate a deep respect for traditional Judaism with the insights, ideas, and innovations growing from contemporary life. If you are interested in Jewish religion, spirituality, culture, history

and philosophy, there is a place for you here, whether you are a senior citizen or a child, single or married, gay or straight, part of an interfaith household, one with longstanding Jewish practice, or no previous Jewish affiliation. About half of our members live in southern Westchester County and half live in the Riverdale/Kingsbridge area of the Bronx. At present, many of our ongoing programs take place at the the Reform Church of Hastings, 18 Farragut Avenue in Hastings-on-Hudson, while we look for a more permanent home in the Riverdale-Yonkers-Hastings area. Led by Rabbinic Leader Solomon Hoffman, a rabbinic student at the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College, we gather for Shabbat services two weekends each month - typically providing a service and discussion for adults on Friday night, and a service geared for children and adults on alternate Saturday mornings, as well as Havdalah services combined with other programming on Saturday evenings. We also gather as a community to celebrate holidays and life cycle events together and organize regular programs related to the Jewish experience. She'arim/Gateways, our innovative approach to Hebrew School, meets weekly and offers classes for children ranging in age from kindergarten to seventh grade. We also offer a free Pre-K program on Shabbat mornings once a month. During the year in which families approach Bar/Bat Mitzvah, parents and young people together share in a unique group exploration in preparation for the milestone event. Learn more at http://www.mishkanhaam.org/beresheit/shearim-gateways/. Our Adult education program includes Sunday brunch seminars, a study group that meets monthly to discuss selected readings, and monthly Saturday evening Havdalah discussions. Our Tikkun Olam/Social Action committee organizes and invites adult and family participation in local community needs and beyond. All of this activity occurs only with the active participation of our members, each of whom brings something unique to our community. Mishkan Ha’am’s community, the “tent of the people,” is constructed of the gifts that each one brings: the faith and doubts shared, the questions voiced, the wisdom offered, the melodies sung, the compassion shown, as well as the many forms of hands-on assistance needed to bring activities to life.

On January 27, we had our 8th annual Tu B'Shevat Green Fair. Our She'arimers taught the whole congregation about a green topic they have studied by creating interactive exhibits and raising money and items for their causes. Our amazing She'arimers tackled vitally important issues including: saving the orcas, natural beauty products and how this affects the amount of plastic waste in our environment, pollinators, animal testing, the benefits of thrift stores, plastic recycling, noise pollution, planting seeds, endangered wolves, veganism, and food waste. It was an incredible program and I could not be more proud of our hard working, incredible She'arimers!!!!

The Progressive Israel Network has circulated a letter condemning Israeli Finance Minister Bezalal Smotrich and protesting his long history of promoting dangerous and violent policies, as anathema to the tenets of democracy and equality. Currently more than 100 Jewish organizations, congregations and allies across the country have signed the letter. Minister Smotrich is planning a trip to the United States, and all signatories to the letter pledge to not invite Smotrich to speak at any of their groups during his visit, and to speak out against his participation in other platforms across our communities.

At a special steering committee meeting attended by many of our congregation families, we unanimously voted to add the name of our Mishkan Ha’am congregation to the Progressive Israel Network letter. The text of the letter, and the list of signers to date can be found at:

We, the undersigned, who care deeply about the security and well-being of the State of Israel, are signing this letter to protest the racism and incitement of long-time settlement movement leader and Netanyahu-appointed Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich who is reportedly planning a trip to the Unite...

Our reconstructionist congregation held an intergenerational Friday Night Service in early January, with She’arim, our community of multi-age learners, with many members joining us remotely. We came together to welcome Shabbat with music, story, reflection and discussion, and to experience the joy and peace of Shabbat by connecting with our community and our traditions.

Join us in any of our activities and programs - see our website at

This past Sunday we celebrated Simchas Torah, “Rejoicing with the Torah,” the holiday that marks the conclusion of the annual cycle of Torah readings, and the beginning of a new cycle. We celebrated outdoors, on the same site in Yonkers where, for the first time since the Covid pandemic began, we gathered under our big tent for the High Holidays.

Backed by our wonderful band of super musicians, “The Yiddiots,” we sang and danced to Klezmer and Israeli melodies. For the hakafot- our dancing, our “going around”- our rabbinical leader drew on themes from the bible corresponding to the letters of the Hebrew alphabet.

Then, as our congregation has done for many years, everyone present formed a big circle, and we unrolled our entire Torah, each person gently holding the Torah scroll at the bottom in the palms of their hands. Our children were welcomed into the center of the circle, and we all watched and listened as four of our community members and our Rabbinic leader read the last parashah of Deuteronomy, and the first parashah of Genesis.

A wonderful and joyous music and dance-filled afternoon!

Twenty five years! Our community recently celebrated the twenty fifth anniversary of the Mishkan Ha’am Reconstructionist congregation. We gathered under our big tent with music, song, dance, a feast of a meal, highlights and remembrances of the past, a toast to our future, and a big anniversary cake! With our “family” musicians supporting us, we participated in singing a song that our rabbinic leader composed for the occasion. Members, honored guests, and prior rabbinical leaders spoke warmly of the uniqueness, energy and endurance of our community.
We welcome all to join us for our interactive and participatory high holiday services under our tent in Park Hill in Yonkers. See www.mishkanhaam.org for our schedule.
