The definition of trauma bonding is often confused or debated. This graphic describes the cycle that may be learned in childhood and reemerge in relationships formed in adulthood.

As always please be collegial and supportive in your responses, thank you 🙏

It didn’t start with the men you dated.
It started with the man who was meant to protect you.

1️⃣ You learned love feels inconsistent ❤️‍🩹
Some days he gave you attention, other days he withdrew it.
Example: You felt you had to earn warmth, not receive it freely.
❤️‍🩹 Healing insight: Real love is steady, not something you have to chase.

2️⃣ You became hyper-aware of moods ❤️‍🩹
You learned to read the room to stay safe.
Example: You can sense a shift in energy instantly and adjust yourself to keep the peace.
❤️‍🩹 Healing insight: You are allowed to exist without constantly managing others.

3️⃣ You confused emotional distance with strength ❤️‍🩹
Coldness felt normal, even attractive.
Example: You’re drawn to men who are hard to reach, thinking winning them means something.
❤️‍🩹 Healing insight: Healthy love feels safe, not like a challenge to conquer.

4️⃣ You overgive to feel worthy ❤️‍🩹
You learned love comes from what you do, not who you are.
Example: You pour everything into relationships, hoping they’ll finally choose you.
❤️‍🩹 Healing insight: You don’t have to prove your worth to be loved.

5️⃣ You tolerate what should have broken you ❤️‍🩹
Because part of you believes this is just how love is.
Example: You stay longer than you should, hoping they’ll change like you once hoped he would.
❤️‍🩹 Healing insight: Familiar does not mean healthy.

6️⃣ You’re still trying to rewrite your first story ❤️‍🩹
Every relationship becomes a chance to finally be chosen.
Example: You fight harder in toxic love because it feels like fixing the past.
❤️‍🩹 Healing insight: You don’t heal by repeating the wound.

My final thought…
There is nothing wrong with you.
You adapted to a love that was never safe, and now your mind is trying to find what feels familiar, not what is healthy.

Your safety matters to God. Full stop. We’ve misquoted Scripture to protect reputations instead of protecting people. And it’s time someone said it out loud.

The Malachi 2 passage that is so often quoted as “God hates divorce,” is actually saying that God hates when a husband is treacherous and unfaithful to his wife. Hates it. He hates when you are being treated with cruelty and indifference. He hates it when you’re struggling financially because of your husband’s sin. He sees your situation and he hates it.

When a covenant becomes a cover for cruelty, the problem isn’t the woman who leaves. The problem is the harm being done under the guise of biblical marriage.

God’s heart is never aligned with oppression.

He doesn’t value the institution of marriage more than He values His daughters. He doesn’t ask you to endure abuse to preserve an image of godliness.

If you’ve been told that staying in an abusive marriage honors God more than seeking safety, that’s not biblical truth. That’s spiritual manipulation.

God sees what’s happening behind closed doors. And His heart breaks for you, not because you’re considering divorce, but because you’ve been harmed in a relationship that was supposed to reflect His love.
