From August 9 to the 11 our Southern officers held their officer retreat at Ocean City! 🌊 ⛱️☀️

The officers worked through their binders, starting with getting to know each other better through personality’s tests! They then reflected on past years to identify their strengths and weaknesses. Based on the results they develped their Program of Activities (POA) which focuses on the improvements they want to see followed through. Lastly, the officers worked through this year’s calendar to plan discussions for future meetings and activities to share with the chapter!

These will not only help the officer’s personally but the chapter itself to stay organized and complete our objectives!

The officers were also tasked with cooking one meal with a partner during the day whether it was breakfast lunch or dinner!

They also had time to play some intense mini golf games, relax at the pool and beach, get ice cream, and play arcade games! ⛳️ 🍦🕹️

Individual State Award Winners
Four outstanding Southern FFA members earned major individual honors at the state level:

Cheyenne Schneider (Class of 2026): Crowned State Champion of the FFA Talent Event for her exceptional singing performance. Schneider plans apply to compete at Nationals in October. 

Kevin Kayton (Class of 2026): Earned the prestigious Proficiency Award in Nursery Production and placed 6th in Senior Prepared Public Speaking. He also received the Tag to Teach Ag Award from the Maryland Agriculture Teachers Association. 

Camilla Amaya (Sophomore): Secured an impressive 5th place finish in the competitive FFA Creed Contest.

Zoey Howes (Junior): Earned a strong 7th place finish in the Junior Prepared Public Speaking Leadership Development Event.

We are excited to have students from Crofton, Annapolis, South River and Broadneck High School’s join us in the classroom to learn about Agriculture Science and participate in our FFA Chapter! We are looking forward to the growth of the program.
Thank you to everyone who helped with the expansion!

Students at these four high schools can take agriculture classes at Southern High this fall through a pilot program. “We’re truly preparing kids for their next steps,” an official said.

Through 6/23/26 - 6/25/26 Southern FFA attended the Maryland FFA state Convention hosted at the WISP Resort and competed in various competitions at Garrett College. During the times our members were not competing they had the chance to attend multiple different kinds of work shops and tours.

Workshops included: Communication and listening hosted by visiting state officers from Tennessee and Idaho, members learned the importance of effective communication with peers. Pattern? hosted by the National FFA president members had the chance to learn teamwork and understanding to compete for a common goal. All about insects, where members had the chance to interact with different species of bugs.
Last workshop was Unwritten, members learned how to overcome there fears they maybe struggling with through scenarios.

Tours included: Grandmas Jams where members learned how local Jam is harvested, made, packaged, and put into consumers hands. Beef Tour where our members learned not only about rotational grazing but also genetic engineering. Woodlake Christmas Tree farm tour, members learned the growing presses and selection of pine trees for the holidays. WISP resort tour, members learned how the snow for the resort is made during the season and about the local golf courses.

The heat wave is here, for those with livestock remember to look after them more often than usual. Water dispensers will evaporate more than normal. Also keep a fan on them if possible especially with the HOGS. They do not adjust well to this kind of heat and tend not to eat as much as they normally do. Hose them down often as well the pen they are housed in. 🐖🐐🐑🐄

A few of our chapter officers had the privilege of attending the Washington Leader Conference in Washington, DC. They learned how to create and develop a LTS(living to serve) plan while fostering new connections with FFA members around the country.

“Do what we can, with what we have, where we are” was the motto of the conference that reflected the lasting impact our plan could make on our communities

It is always unfortunate when community members pass, but we try to honor them for years to come with memorial FFA Jackets. The latest 2 jackets arrived this morning. In memory of Deana Phillips Tice Father, David Phillips, and in memory of James Miller of Bowen's Farm Supply. These jackets will last for decades in the Southern FFA program and provide jackets to members before they are able to have one of their own. Thank you to the community for supporting the purchase of these new jackets.

Last week we hosted our banquet for the end of the 2025-2026 year.! Being hosted at the Anna Arundel County fair grounds.

Members Raegan Moreland, Mackenzie Nutwell and Zoey Howes earned there Gift of Blue signifying their commitments to FFA with their now own personalized jackets.

Members Nancy Rohan, Kylie Rhor, Abigale Parks, Josie Crandall, Maggie Pearson, Camila Amaya earned their green hand degree which requires the student to learning FFA history, the creed, and planning a Supervised Agricultural Experience.

Many of our members this past year competed in different Career Development Event. With Agriculture Farm Management placing 2nd, Milk Qualify placing 8th, Nursery Landscape placing 6th and Veterinary Science placing 14th.

Our Case completer’s include Kevin Kayton, Cheyenne Schneider, Claire Ogilvie, and Allison Bullock. These Students completed all four years of the CASE program during there time in high school.

The Blue and Gold Awards went to Camila Amaya and Liam Spargo for there continues dedication to our Chapter.
The DeKalb Award was awarded to Kevin Kayton for his work ethic and passion for agriculture.

Members earning their chapter degree were awarded to Rylee Hardesty and Madison Sutherland. These member’s have reached the highest level of membership FFA chapter can bestow to members with their leadership and commitment to agriculture.

Our 2025 meat evaluation team- Kevin Kayton, Cheyenne Schneider, Allison Bullock, and Colton Scolfeild- placed bronze for National CDE’s.

In Region 3 Public Speaking LDE’s we had 10 of our members participate! Kevin Kayton, Claire Ogilvie, Zoey Howes, Maggie Pearson, Abi Parks, Camila Amaya, Josie Crandell, Cheyenne Schneider and Carlos Navarrete- Fuentes.
