Jalen Lewis and Zariyah Spann present their Extended Essays to their senior cohort and to the junior cohort. These two vastly different presentations represent the variety of topics the students chose for their independent research. In addition to sharing the information they learned throughout this year-long process, the seniors shared advice based on their experience. All of the students shared that having an outline proved to be extremely helpful.

While our IB Extended Essay seniors were presenting, Iris Carr (not pictured) took a few of our Pre-IB 9th graders on a scavenger hunt! In our first picture, Claire Smith, Abigail Watford, and Antonette Baker (left to right) are out and about during our 1st Pulse meeting of the year looking for clues! The girls spent time learning about some of the hidden places on campus (i.e., the time capsule) and about who has completed the work to earn a doctorate and who has served in the military. While Claire, Abigail, and Antonette were with Iris, the rest of the Pre-IB 9th graders were in stations in our classroom working on team building activities. Check out the IB Extended Essay seniors! This week, they presented their research question and a summary of their Extended Essay research. To prepare, students developed a research question based on an area of interest. Throughout the process, they edit, reflect, and revise - with the help of their Extended Essay Supervisor and their Extended Essay teacher. Look on the board for their question or their topic. Throughout the rest of the semester, students will continue to work on their Extended Essay.

During our first days of school, our IB teachers - from the Core to Group 6 - began the year in the traditional way - expectations and course content - but the IB philosophy was apparent in every course. For example, in IB English, Ms. Wilcox’s students reviewed the IB Mission Statement. In Ms. Adams’ class, students were quizzed on the IB Learner Profile. Students in Ms. Gainey’s class problem-solved, and in Mr. Stewart’s class, students were answering questions about ethics. We’re in for an exciting year with our students and our faculty!

After a successful Pre-IB Freshman Open House, we are preparing for the IB Open House for our juniors. This Open House will further help our juniors learn what strategies they can implement to be successful on Day 1 so that on the days of IB Examinations, they are ready.

We look forward to seeing our IB juniors and their parents/guardians at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 28th.

Last week, in addition to receiving the DCSD MacBook at the HHS Freshman Orientation, the Pre-IB freshmen had an opportunity to meet an administrator, their school counselor, and current students. During the Pre-IB Freshman Open House, Pre-IB students also met the IB Coordinator The HHS Orientation and Pre-IB Open House provided information to help the newest members of the HHS family be prepared for the first day of school.

Last month, Ms. Auman's IB Dance students performed their Internal and External Assessments at the IB Dance Showcase.

Before each candidate performed, she provided an introduction to the song choice which established relevance. This addition to the showcase allowed the audience to to hear the why of the song selection.

At our last Pulse meeting of the year, two more sophomore Pre-IB groups presented ways on how they can be an A (advocator) C (communicator) and an E (encourager).

As the sophomores prepare to transition from Honors classes to IB classes, applying these strategies will help them meet the moment and rigor.
