Don’t let your kid “screen-time” all summer… read a book or try to solve a puzzle. The public library has lists and sections of fun reading for different grade levels. Sudoku is wonderful for using logic and the combinatorics used in Computer Sci. For ex., from Sudoku book author Will Shortz, I got the tip of building on answers I’d filled in so far, and using the process of elimination. Or try puzzle-solving aids like color-coding, which, by the way, translate to school skills like highlighting and solving math word problems. Voila, your child becomes engaged!

Path to Math FAQ Why do kids too often learn to “hate Math”?

Math teachers face the challenge of many learning styles in the same classroom, and their resources and time are limited. As I am both a math specialist and a special education teacher, I teach highly specifically, with individual interests and goal-setting in mind. I work with the child’s math & science inclinations to make math tutoring sessions “POP” -- and stay with the student’s deficits and strengths until he or she can do more and more on his/her own math power.
