The University of Connecticut Integrated Residency in Emergency Medicine provides an exceptional training opportunity for the Emergency Medicine resident. A dynamic faculty, strongly committed to teaching, is combined with health care institutions that have a long established record of excellence in all aspects of medical education. With systematic emphasis on both personal and professional growth, we expect our graduates to become capable leaders in their hospitals and communities and to fulfill their commitment to clinical and personal excellence. Our program's integrated model utilizing a primary clinical site with four affiliate institutions is both a distinctive feature and a strength. Hartford Hospital is the region's Level 1 trauma center with an active aeromedical program and the state's highest patient volume emergency department (over 100,000 a year). Hartford Hospital completely renovated and expanded its Emergency Department in 2012. This state of the art ED offers an excellent environment in which to foster the education of our residents. Francis Hospital in Hartford, with over 70,000 patient visits a year provides a busy urban community ED experience in a learner-centric environment

John Dempsey Hospital (University of Connecticut Health Center) provides exposure to a University Hospital ED with a completely undifferentiated patient population. Connecticut Children's Medical Center is the state's only free standing children's hospital and has an annual census of over 50,000 patients a year. Its emergency department is staffed by pediatric and emergency physicians with fellowship training in pediatric emergency medicine. In summary, our program combines the assets of urban, community, and university practice settings under the close academic sponsorship of the medical school. Together, our institutions assure broad clinical exposure and diverse resident experiences on all levels of patient care.

The eyes might be the window to the soul but over 3 million people present to emergency departments with eye complaints per year. This is why we dedicated a PGY-2 conference day to getting comfortable with common eye procedures such as use of the slit lamp (eye microscope), various methods of measuring intraocular pressure, foreign body removal, lateral canthotomy. 🫣

Between the NASCAR race weekend we covered this weekend at Lime Rock Park, the Travelers Golf Tournament, the Hartford Marathon, UConn events at Rentschler Field and more, our residents have many opportunities to get involved in event medicine. This weekend, PGY-3s Megan Fahey and David Patrick accompanied faculty members Ven Subramanyam, Rich Kamin and our PD Shawn London who were providing medical support for the drivers and crew members at this great event.
