A big thank you to Jessica Brocksom for spending her summer as an intern with the Kid Governor program! Jessica knows this program inside and out—she was Connecticut's second Kid Governor back in 2017, and it was so special to have her bring that experience full circle by helping us prepare for the upcoming program year. We’re grateful for her hard work, creativity, and passion for civic education. 👏

Ten years ago today -- September 9, 2015 -- Connecticut Democracy Center launched Connecticut's Kid Governor. Our goal for this pilot program was to engage 5th graders in authentic and meaningful civic learning. A decade later, 103,000+ 5th graders across Connecticut, Nebraska, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, Oregon, and Vermont have been empowered to change the world.

To celebrate Civic Learning Week, the Connecticut Democracy Center hosted the sixth annual Kid Governor Leadership Summit on Saturday! The Kid Governors and Cabinet Members/Executive Councilors of Connecticut, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, and Oregon came together to build relationships across states, find commonalities in their platforms, and learn more about leadership and teamwork.

A special thanks to our keynote speakers: Alexis Howard and Abigail Smith Judstra from the National Governors Association, Larisa Kottke from Leadership Greater Hartford, and Oregon Secretary of State Tobias Read.

Today marks the 9th anniversary of the Connecticut's Kid Governor program and the origin of the national Kid Governor program!

The Connecticut Democracy Center is celebrating 9 years of Connecticut's Kid Governor! On September 9, 2015, we launched Kid Governor as a pilot program to engage 5th graders in authentic and meaningful civic learning. Nine years later, 10,000+ Connecticut 5th graders participate each year and we have Kid Governor affiliate programs in New Hampshire, Oklahoma, Oregon, and a fourth state that we will announce soon.

As we prepare for the election of Connecticut's 10th Kid Governor, we thank the thousands of students, educators, and supporters whose enthusiasm and steadfast support have helped make Kid Governor the nationally-renowned civic education program it is today!

Our colleagues Sally, Brian, and Ola are heading back to CT after an exciting National Forum in Washington, DC! They are leaving with ideas for civics, the latest research into civic education, and new relationships with iCivics and CivXNow partners.

Monday marks the start of Civic Learning Week, a national effort to prioritize civic education! To celebrate, the Connecticut Democracy Center is offering virtual programs, themed tours of Connecticut's Old State House a State Constitution exhibit, and civics resources. Oklahoma's Kid Governor Mila visited the State Capitol in Oklahoma City earlier this month! She met with representatives and senators, was recognized on the floor of the House of Representatives, and advocated for her platform addressing youth mental health. Keep up the great work, Mila!
