What happens when years of clinical experience, advanced education, and a passion for teaching come together? For Dr. Joni Collins, they became the foundation for entrepreneurship.

With more than 20 years in clinical practice, Collins has built a career spanning multiple areas of medicine and now leads Twelve Twenty-Eight Precision Aesthetic and Regenerative Medicine.

Collins has also trained more than 1,200 medical providers, using her experience to educate and empower other clinicians as they explore new possibilities within their own careers. Her philosophy captures the heart of her work: Educate. Empower. Serve.

Celebrating PA Week with an Alumni Spotlight — Marino Mauro, DMS ’21

For Marino Mauro, DMS ’21, being a PA means making a difference both inside and far beyond the clinical setting.

A physician assistant and graduate of LMU-SMS Doctor of Medical Science program, Mauro returned to his hometown of Chukudum, South Sudan, on a humanitarian mission alongside former DMS classmates Amanda Roy and Gem Cabero, and psychiatric nurse Morgan Rodriguez.

Working alongside local healthcare providers and witnessing the challenges facing this remote community strengthened Mauro’s commitment to giving back—and helped fuel the continued work of Marino Good Health, the nonprofit organization he founded to improve healthcare access in South Sudan.

Through Marino Good Health, Mauro and his supporters have provided hospital mattresses, medications, medical supplies, health education, and support for local healthcare workers.

His story demonstrates how PAs can use their education, experience, and leadership to serve communities and create meaningful change around the world.

Celebrating PA Week with an Alumni Spotlight — W. John Stout, DMS, MPAS, MBA, PA-C, FAACM

For more than 23 years, W. John Stout has built a career as a physician assistant spanning surgery, internal medicine, urology, long-term care, and military medicine. He also continues to serve as a Lieutenant Colonel and physician assistant in the Ohio Air National Guard.

In 2026, he took another step in that journey by opening Stout Aesthetics in Brecksville, Ohio, bringing together his experience in clinical medicine, leadership, education, business, and commitment to lifelong learning.

Stout, a graduate of LMU-SMS Doctor of Medical Science (DMS) program, Stout credits his LMU experience with helping him see his role as a PA in new ways—not only as a clinician, but also as an educator, leader, and entrepreneur.

Stout’s story is a great example of the many paths available within the PA profession and the opportunities that can come from continuing to learn, grow, and pursue new goals.
