What is Holistic Education? Holistic education is a new way of thinking for most of us. Holistic education provides a quality academic education while encompassing the whole child including the intellectual, artistic, physical, social, emotional, spiritual, and civic development of students. This holistic approach brings together elements that support the development of a child who is healthy, knowledgeable, motivated, and engaged, seeking to ensure all that is required for successful life and preparation for society. Why create another charter school? Charter schools provide parents a quality public choice for their child's education. Public charter schools are free to the public so there are no tuition or fees to attend. Weber county has only a few charter schools to choose from and each has their own focus (Spanish, business, Montessori, etc), but none that focus on personal wellness and environmental stewardship. We feel that by creating a charter school with a focus on holistic education, wellness, and environment gives one more option for parents and students to choose from. What is Expeditionary Learning? GreenWood will use the Expeditionary Learning to support our educational programs. Expeditionary Learning challenges students to think critically and take active roles in their classrooms and communities. The approach is that the student learns best when they are active participants in the learning process and not passive receivers of information. The model emphasizes high levels of student engagement, achievement, and character development. The Expeditionary Learning Model is successfully being used in more than 150 schools in 30 states. What grades will GreenWood serve? GreenWood will serve Kindergarten through 8th grade: 50 students in each grade. Do GreenWood students wear uniforms? No, but our dress code will emphasize the individual creativtity, modesty, and safety of our student to keep students focused on their learning. School Dress Code Policy

How can I get involved? We need lots of help- we need you! Your involvment is critical to our charter school becoming all that we envisioned we could become. If you would like to get involved now, your work will build you to becoming a founding member of this school, giving your family priority for enrollment. We need help with library, marketing and procurrment. We have a school that needs everything from tables to books, pencils to soap dispensers, office chairs to PE equipment, but most of all: WE NEED STUDENTS!! What does "wellness" look like at GreenWood ? We are starting with some basic guidelines that we like to call, the Prescription for Health. These guidelines will support our goals for providing a holistic education to our students and their families:

0 sugary drinks. This school is just what I have been looking for, so how do I enroll my child in GreenWood Charter School? Enrollment is completed on the Enrollment & Admissions page. If my child is accepted into GreenWood Charter School, are his or her siblings also accepted? Siblings of currently enrolled students are given preference, and the practical result of this is that all siblings are usually enrolled. Occasionally, families may have to wait for an opening, but that is rare. Will my students need to re-enter the enrollment lottery each year? No, once your student is accepted into the school, their enrollment is permanent. Who can attend a charter school? Charter schools are open to all students, regardless of race, religion, gender, status, or other preference just as any other public school. Charter schools may limit enrollment based on capacity, which means students are sometimes placed on a waiting list if there are more applications than spots available. What is the tuition? There is NO tuition. GreenWood is a public charter school and receives funding from the State of Utah just as every other public school does. Does GreenWood Charter School charge fees?? GreenWood Charter School follows all Utah State Rules related to charging school fees as outlined in R227-407. Fees are set, approved and published each school year by GreenWood Board of Directors. Are teachers certified? Teachers are certified and meet state board requirements, but just as important, our teachers are passionate about wellness and the environment and will work cooperatively with our parents to engage their students in Expeditionary Learning. Is there a bus service? Charter schools do not draw students from a limited area like regular public schools, so providing transportation is not practical. Parents are responsible for transportation to and from school. Carpools are encouraged, as well as arrangements with public transportation where feasible. Is school lunch offered? Yes, and breakfast too! GreenWood participates in the federal food program and offers a healthy menu for lunch and breakfast daily. Lunch is provided at a minimal cost for students and staff. I have a lot of questions, can I speak with someone? One of the best ways to get information and ask questions is at one of our parent information meetings. Otherwise, please understand that our volunteers are working to do all the things necessary to open school on time! As such, we appreciate if you send inquiries via email at [email protected] and allow us to respond with information. If the need arises, we can arrange for the appropriate person to call you, but until the school opens and we have a regular staff, we need your cooperation and patience. Are parents welcome to visit and/or volunteer? We encourage parents to be an active part of the school community. They are always welcome to arrange a time with their child's teacher to visit or volunteer in the classroom. Is there a Special Education Program? Yes! GreenWood has special education teachers employed to address the needs of children who require special education. GreenWood complies with all federal special education laws, including “IDEA 2004”. The school and special education teachers work directly with the parents of special education children to properly address the individual needs of each child receiving special education services.
